Placement Test: English As Second Language (ESL)

This test consists of a 30-minute timed writing sample and a one-hour timed multiple choice reading comprehension test.  The multiple choice test is administered on a computer.

  • Tests are given  by appointment.
  • Students may test on a Stand-By basis if seats are available. Appointments are recommended.
  • All students should arrive at Assessment Office 15 minutes before test time. See test dates and times.
  • Students may retest after one year if they have not enrolled in ESL courses and show proof of study or review. Ex. Writing or Reading Skills courses, Adult Education ESL courses, ESL courses from another college, tutorial or documented self study.
  • Students must bring photo ID, and know their De Anza 8-digit Student ID number.
  • Students are advised to test well in advance of registration.
  • ESL Placement Test Results may take 3 weeks or more to be ready
  • Results are posted on student's My Portal.

Who should take the ESL Placement Test?
  • All English as a Second Language students who wish to register for any ESL course should take the ESL test.
  • Students who have tested or completed ESL courses at other colleges (including Foothill students) must test at De Anza unless they have completed a course equivalent to De Anza's college level ESL 5 with grade C or better.
  • Students whose strongest language is not English and who have not studied 6 or more years in a school where all courses were taught in English are advised to take the ESL test.
What are the retest policies?
  • As of April 4, 2011 the ESL Placement test may be re-taken once after 1 year only if student has not enrolled in an ESL course and provides proof of preparation for retest.  Ex. Adult Education ESL course, Writing or Reading Skills course, tutorial...
  • Students must wait for ESL Test placement results before they are eligible to take the English Placement Test. English test is advised only for students who place into the Advanced ESL course level.
  • Placement tests are not challenge tests.  Students cannot re-test to challenge a failed, enrolled or withdrawn course.
