Chad Okamoto Award

Chadwick Shuji Okamoto was a graduate student in De Anza's Animation program from 1998-2001. Soon after achieving his goal to become a professional animator, he was tragically stricken by a fatal heart attack.
This award is made in his memory to the De Anza student who exemplifies Chad's finest traits: artistic excellence, tireless work ethic and generous assistance to others.

The creation of an animated film is a formidable task, requiring a wide range of fine art, audio, filmmaking and narrative skills. Yet, it provides great creative satisfaction and can lead to extensive vocational exposure.

This award commemorates Chad Okamoto's determination, patience and perseverance to become a professional character animator in this highly competitive field and is an incentive to encourage other students to fulfill their career goals in animation. Although already a talented artist and fine arts graduate from the University of California, Los Angeles, Chad continued to acquire new skills and develop his portfolio to achieve his life dream of becoming an animator. Less than a month before Chad's passing, his goal was fulfilled and he was hired as a professional animator.

His gentle spirit, warmth, determination, talent and generosity are remembered by those who established this award in his name.

The award, consisting of a plaque and cash scholarship, is given annually at De Anza Film Finals in the Spring quarter.
