Coach Bio

Tony Santos has coached football for 25 years, and is entering his 10th season of coaching at De Anza. Santos previously served as the Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator, and has several notable accomplishments.

In 2012, the Dons won the Nor Cal Conference with an 8-3 record with an offense that averaged 37.5 PPG. In addition, the Dons were ranked #5 NCFA, #9 in CA and #15 nationally.

In 2010, #11 NCFA Dons won the Golden Gate Conference Championship. Three players from this team made the NFL and two of those were drafted thanks to recruiting efforts by Santos.

In 2009, the #16 NCFA Dons (8-3) were led by the Santos offense that averaged 40.8 PPG. This ranked #4 in California and the team also claimed the Coast Conference and Southern Division Bowl Championships. Overall, Santos has coached in: 6 Bowl Games: Lions, 2 Silicon Valley, Togo’s Delta, Central Division Championship and Southern Division Championship

Prior to coaching at De Anza, Santos was the Head Coach at Westmont High School in Campbell. During his six-year tenure at the helm, Santos won back-to-back BVAL Championships in 2004 and 2005. His overall record was 39-24-2 with three CCS playoff appearances. He has the only playoff wins in school history.   

Collegiately, Santos played for California State University, Sacramento under the direction of Bob Mattos. As a running back for the Hornets, Santos contributed to the team in both offense and special teams. His position coach, Greg Knapp is currently the Denver Broncos Quarterback Coach.

Prior to Sacramento State, Santos played football for Steve Cox and baseball for Steve Bordi at West Valley College in Saratoga. He was the team captain, a two-way player and all-league performer for the Vikings.

In high school, Santos was a perennial all league standout, seven-time letterman, triathlete (baseball, basketball and football) while attending Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose. Santos was a starter on Walt Arnold’s 1981 CCS and California State Championship Football team. In addition, his 1981 team was voted into the Bellarmine College Preparatory Hall of Fame.
