Coaches
Coach Mattis is in his second season as Head Men's and Women's Track and Cross Country Coach. Coach Mattis has 11 years of Track and Cross Country Coaching Experience from Junior High thru the Community College Ranks in Illinois, Iowa and now California. He has coached numerous national and state qualifiers throughout his career and also placed numerous athletes into 4-year schools to continue their athletic careers. Nick received his Bachelor's Degree in K-12 Physical Education from Saint Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa and his Master's Degree in Kinesiology (Sport Management) from Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois. Coach Mattis is USATF Level I Coaching Certified. Assistant Coaches Jerry Noble - Coach Noble enters his first season coaching at De Anza. Coach Noble brings his experience and enthusiasm and will assist in the multi events (Pole Vault, Jumps, Throws). In 2001, Noble earned All-American honors when he won a NCAA national title in the decathlon. Coach Noble received his Master's Degree from Chico State in Physical Education. Coach Noble is USATF Level I certified. Ray Cornell - Coach Cornell is in his second season coaching at De Anza. His primary responsibilities are with the De Anza hurdlers. Coach Cornell has previously been head coach at Monta Vista and Fremont High Schools. Ray is also a member of the De Anza football coaching staff. He lives with his wife Teresa and two kids. Gordon Hovey - Coach Hovey enters his first season with De Anza. Coach Hovey is responsible for the throwers here at De Anza. He is a graduate of the USC School of Business and was PAC-10 Champion of the Discus while at USC. Coach Hovey is also a high school graduate of Monta Vista High School in Cupertino. Volunteer Assistants Coaches Mike Mayes - Coach Mayes starts his first coaching job at De Anza this spring after using his remaining eligibility this fall as a member of the 2009 State Qualifying Cross Country Team at De Anza. Coach Mayes is responsible for helping with the distance runners this spring.
