Final Email from Interim Chancellor Mike Brandy - Feb. 9, 2010
February 9, 2010
As I reach the conclusion of my time as your interim chancellor, I wanted to share a few thoughts with you.
I thank all of you for the continued dedication to our students and our mission. As I talk with faculty, classified professionals and managers, I am constantly struck by your desire to do what is right for our students. We have seen some creative solutions to our budget problems emerge while doing the hard work of figuring out how to reduce our budget by more than $10 million due to state budget cuts. It is a rough time for all public services in the state, but we must continue to fight for the pathways to access and success for the students we need to serve.
The budget problems we are facing are significant. I am personally saddened by the effect these reductions have on our staff, particularly those likely to lose their jobs next year. The reductions are a result of falling tax revenues in the state and the inability of the Legislature to find new revenues while waiting for the economic recession to end. I know from serving as an education administrator in California for 39 years that the cycle we are experiencing will end at some point and we will recover. The role of the community college within California continues to be valued across political, economic and social lines. It is a tribute to all of you that we enjoy such an excellent reputation, and it will serve us well as we battle for restoration of funding to our system so we can serve the students waiting at our doors.
I have deeply appreciated all of your support these last nine months while I have been interim chancellor. Thank you. I have had the opportunity to work with your new chancellor, Dr. Linda Thor, for many days over these past two months as she prepares to assume her role on Feb. 16. I know there are many events planned to give her a warm welcome. I believe she will be a great leader for our district. I have been impressed with the depth of her experience as a long-time college president in a very large college, as well as her sense of innovation and commitment to student learning. You will enjoy working with her.
I will stay on board a month or so to make sure the transition is thorough and systematic. You will be in good hands with your new chancellor.
Thanks again for all of your support. I look forward to Foothill-De Anza's continued leadership in creating innovative learning opportunities for our students and supporting their success. Keep up the good work.
