De Anza Budget Update - May 4, 2010

Dear Colleagues,

Budget news

We are awaiting the governor's May Revise of the state budget, to be released on or about the 14th. There has been an odd silence from Sacramento on all budget matters, with only hints and rumors about marginal increases in state revenues, the rise and fall of estimated budget deficits, and deals that could or could not be made. About one thing we are certain: Our students have taken the lead in advocating for our budget, and their marches in March had a definite impact on legislators. We have heard much appreciation from our allies and advocates in Sacramento about the impact of the student demonstrations and advocacy.

On the home front, the college and district are working to develop the budget for 2010-11, dealing, as usual, with the significant unknowns in the state process. After the wrenching work of the past year, some of our colleagues among the classified staff unfortunately still face layoff. I'm happy to report that the number has dropped over the past month, as several of our affected staff members have found new employment at the college, and we continue to work together to craft solutions for as many of our colleagues as we possibly can. I want to thank the administrators, classified professionals and faculty who are working hard to find options for the folks affected by layoff. This has not been an easy time, but I can assure you that virtually no college in the state has approached the budget crisis with as much thoughtfulness and care as we have at De Anza.

Summer Session

Finally, a reminder: We will be offering a full summer session and anticipate a record enrollment. Many area districts are canceling or reducing their summer sessions, so we expect many students to try to enroll after we have accommodated our own continuing students. We should be prepared for an unusually busy summer.

I want to offer my heartfelt thanks to everyone for the human kindness and professionalism with which you are navigating these difficult times. It is an inspiration to work with each and every one of you. I will be back in touch when we hear something more about the state budget, and again to remind you about commencement.

Sincerely,
Brian Murphy
