Governor & Legislators Reach Budget "Framework" - Sept. 24, 2010
September 23, 2010
This afternoon, spokespersons for the governor and legislative leaders stated that the "framework" for a budget deal was reached in day-long negotiations at the governor's private office in Santa Monica. This is encouraging news as we see community college reserves dwindling quickly and as next Tuesday's state payment--one of the largest of the year--quickly approaches.
There are no details yet available on either the Proposition 98 funding level or the community college budget. Legislative staff are expected to work on details throughout the weekend, and the governor and legislative leaders are scheduled to reconvene on Monday. As we get details about either the community college budget or the overall spending plan generally, we will post them to the League's Twitter stream.
The news of the deal came in as I was driving over the Grapevine after a great Commission on the Future workshop today in Visalia. This week's workshops have reached about 150 community college and higher education leaders, and it is very exciting to see faculty, staff, students, administrators and trustees so focused on improving student completion. Hopefully, we will learn that this budget deal maintains access and existing student success programs in community colleges and see expeditious approval from legislators, so that we can get back to work on the important issues of student success and stop worrying about whether colleges will have the cash to keep the doors open.
