Career Opportunities in Real Estate

young man talking to coupleReal estate agents and brokers assist their clients with buying, selling or renting property – including homes, buildings, commercial space and undeveloped land.

Real estate agents may specialize in selling certain types of residential or commercial property. They often find desirable properties, prepare them for sale or lease and assist in negotiating terms.

Agents can work for a broker in a small firm or a large company. They're usually paid by commission, as agreed by the broker and the agent.

In California, real estate agents and brokers must be licensed by the state Department of Real Estate. Licensing requirements include college-level courses in real estate principles and practices.

Employment Outlook: 2016-2026

  • The number of jobs for real estate agents is expected to increase 13.4%
  • Jobs for real estate brokers are expected to grow by 16.2%

These ten-year projections are calculated by California's Employment Development Department, which collects data about the state's workforce and economic trends.
