QUANTUM MECHANICS FOR
Careers and
Technology
EVERYONE (440)
Quantum mechanics is a branch of physics that explains how things work.
It provides a set of laws that are believed to govern the behavior of everything in the physical universe. For more than
a century, it has been an effective key
to understanding all kinds of things encountered in daily life. The class will explore this elegant and exciting subject in a nontechnical, nonmathematical way.
Instructor: Awanish Mishra holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry with a minor in quantum physics, along with a master’s degree in theoretical chemistry.
Class requirements: Tablet, laptop or desktop computer with internet capability, Must be age 14 or older. Students under 18 must take this class with an adult who has also registered.
Cost: $69
Date and time: Oct. 13 and 20

IoT 101: AN INTRODUCTION
 TO THE INTERNET OF THINGS
(489)
This course introduces the applications and principles behind the Internet of Things (IoT). Students will learn about the infrastructure-related architectures, technologies and protocol frameworks that enable IoT – and the use of these technologies for various applications. Topics include
• An overview of the Internet of Things
• IoT protocols and systems
• Building blocks and real-time IoT products and solutions
• Sensors and hardware for IoT
• Hands-on practice with IoT hardware platforms such as Raspberry Pi and Arduino
• IoT cloud platforms including Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services and IBM Bluemix
• Integrating smart objects into IoT frameworks
• Student IoT projects
Instructor: Shivakumar Mathapathi is
an adjunct professor at Sonoma State University. He has designed study programs and academic syllabi for IoT courses at Santa Clara University and California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. He has also led a senior design team that developed IoT cloud platforms for smart cities.
