Anita Adams
I am an Environmental Engineering major and Student Leader. I am currently a Senior Mentor for LEAD (Latino Empowerment at De Anza) and the Co-Founder And Co-President of Women Empowered Club. This year I hope to create a continuing resource at De Anza that helps women students overcome retention challenges by connecting them to the resources they need to succeed.

As a returning student, I came to De Anza with the hope of completing a degree in psychology or education. I was tired of struggling and saw education as a means to improve my life. Since becoming a De Anza student, I have both learned and shared far more than I had expected. I learned that there wasn’t a simple solution such as a degree and that I wanted more for myself than a job. I learned that I wanted to take the rough experiences from my life and turn them from being something horrible to something I could learn from and share with others to also learn from. As a result, I decided to change my educational goal into a double major in psychology and women studies.
As I continue through my educational path I still advocate for students. One of the major blocks to education is financial ability. It is something I have struggled with and it is something I see my friends struggle with often. I have always believed that everyone deserves the right to education and I know I am not alone. Yet money is becoming the increasing issue for many students. This is why I was excited to have the opportunity to be in the ICCE internship so that I might be able to help other students persevere. Some of the campus activities I have been involved include co-founding a club “Women Empowered”, serving as mentor for the LEAD Program, student chair for women's history month 2011-2012, and an intern for APALI Youth Leadership Academy

As a first generation college student, I consider pursing my education as an accomplishment. I am grateful for the knowledge, experiences, and the people that I have met through out my journey as a college student. I am currently a Sociology major and planning to transfer next fall. I have had the opportunity to be introduced to the world of leadership and activism; it has been an amazing experience to be able to give back to my community. Since my first year at De Anza, I have been involved with an AB 540/undocumented and allies support group name I.M.A.S.S. This year I continue my passion of advocating for an equal and accessible education for AB 540/undocumented students as the new president of the club. As well, as promote social change and leadership through the ICCE Internship that will allow me to work with youth to encourage and motivate them to pursue a higher education and have a positive impact on their communities.. |

This is my second year at De Anza. I'm in the process of changing my major but for now it is business administration. My social justice journey is in its beginning stages however I feel that it is important for community college students to have all the opportunities that will help them succeed. I’m passionate about helping others and being involved in my community. I enjoy painting and camping in my free time. Besides this internship I am also a De Anza Associated Student Body senator. Through this I have learned the ins and outs to student government and the dedication it takes to serve my school. This year I hope to create organized peer counseling in order to increase access for students.

I am an English Literature major in my last year here at De Anza. I currently hold a position on the Board of Trustees as Student Trustee for the 2012-2013 school year where I work on educational policy and focus on statewide issues affecting students. Last year I held the position of Vice President for Latino\a Empowerment at De Anza where I worked on social justice issues surrounding immigrants in America. This year I am going to work with the latino and LGBTQ students to help increase college access and to work on projects that help bring to light inequalities these groups face. |

I am a Political Science major who is focused on connecting underrepresented students to resources in their community. Whether that involves taking to task policy makers who have restricted access to financial aid, or registering underserved students at De Anza to vote -- I believe public institutions of higher education ought to be affordable, accessible and most of all accountable to those they serve. I am the 2012/13 ambassador to the World Affairs Council in San Francisco, tasked with relaying the complex process in which global issues directly affect our community. This year I hope to give a voice to silent minorities on campus by raising awareness and demystifying misconceptions surrounding Islamic issues, as well as LGBTQ -- in an aim to make De Anza a more inclusive and cognizant campus.

Maily Ramos
My name is Maily Ramos and this is my second year at De Anza College, currently I am a Cultural Anthropology major and I hope to attend Medical School in the future. My passion is to advocate on behalf of AB-540 eligible students, often undocumented, and low-income, regarding their opportunities of achieving a higher education. Oftentimes, that involves assisting students attaining financial resources and dealing with emotional issues involving their difficulties. Due to my personal status as an AB-540 student, I also share these struggles and use personal experience to encourage others to succeed. Currently I am involved with the following on campus organizations, all aimed at assisting undocumented students: IMASS, on campus student lead club; HEFAS, and institutional program at De Anza, and most recently; LEAD, a peer to peer mentoring group. Furthermore, as a result of my internship with the ICCE, I aspire to create a safe space for underserved college and high school aged students, with the purpose ensure facilitation of their academic success.
