Basic Probation Letter to Students

Dear Student:

This letter is to inform you that you are on Basic Academic Probation for Spring 2012 quarter. This means:

• Your G.P.A. is below 2.0.
• If this continues for 3 consecutive quarters, you could be disqualified from De Anza College.

Some of the most common reasons students get on probation include:

• Not understanding the demanding work load of a class
• Job or family commitments
• Financial difficulties 
• Unexpected life events
• Time management

Recommendations that will raise your GPA:

• Repeat any course where you received a grade of “D” or “F”. The new grade you receive from the repeated course will replace the “D” or “F” in your GPA. 
• Develop a balanced schedule of work, home and school responsibilities; 12 units (3 courses) is a full-time load.
• Remember, you should allow 2-3 hours for homework for each unit you are taking (don’t overload yourself).
• Consider utilizing academic support services on campus (see list below).

The Counseling & Advising Center staff is here to assist you with strategies for improving your GPA and achieving your academic goals. You are invited to either make an appointment or walk in to see a counselor for educational planning and strategies to get off probation. The Counseling & Advising Center is located on the second floor of the Student & Community Services Building. Please remember to bring this letter with you when you visit us. Counseling & Advising Center is located on the second floor of the Student & Community Services Building (SCSB) and has counselors and academic advisers who can help you create an academic plan to reach your goals. Call 408.864.5400 for an appointment or walk in to the center for assistance.

Student Success Center
The Student Success Center offers drop-in, group and individual tutoring to help guide student success at De Anza and beyond in locations as listed below.

• Academic Skills (ATC Room 302)
• General Subject Tutoring (ATC Room 305)
• Listening & Speaking (ATC Room 304)
• Math, Science & Technology (Room S43)
• Writing & Reading (ATC Room 309)

Educational Diagnostic Center (EDC) can assess for a learning disability. The center provides tutors, special classes and other services to assist students with learning disabilities to succeed in their academic courses. The center is located in Learning Center West (LCW), Room 110. Call 408.864.8839.

Disability Support Services assist students with physical or psychological disabilities to enhance their success at De Anza. This program is located in the Student & Community Services Building, Room 141. Call 408.864.8753 for more information.

Math Performance Success Program is a three-quarter-length program that helps students completing their math for transfer to a university. Students may start any quarter. Contact Herminio Hernando at 408.864.8851for information.

EOPS provides support services to economically and academically disadvantaged students. Services include academic and personal counseling, peer advising and priority registration. The program is located in the lower level of the Hinson Campus Center. Call 408.864.8950 for information. 

Transfer Center provides a full range of transfer services including advising, workshops, visits from university representatives, transfer admissions agreements and information resources.
