NEW One-Hour Workshop
Sign Up Now for "Getting Started"

Before you take COUN 200 (formerly COUN 100), get a jump on preparing for Fall 2011 registration.  Sign up for a one-hour Getting Started Workshop as soon as possible. This will help you register for classes.

 

All new students are required to take the Getting Started workshop before individually meeting with a counselor or advisor.

All new students are required to enroll in *COUN 200: Orientation to College. Students can find the summer quarter offerings in the Schedule of Classes.

 

*I do not need to take COUN 200 IF:
  • I have an AA/AS degree or higher or
  • The courses I plan to take are for personal enrichment only

As counselors, we look forward to providing you the information you will need to be successful at De Anza. Your first step towards achieving your academic goals will be to enroll in COUN 200.

Critical Steps To Be Completed Before You Attend COUN 200

  1. Apply online to De Anza. Then look for an email confirmation with your Student ID.

  2. Take Placement tests. Take the English or ESL and math placement tests 3 weeks before the first class meeting (**see exceptions).  Take the Chemistry placement test if you are planning to take Biology 6A or Chemistry 1A. Take the Biology 40A Placement Test if you are planning to take Biology 40A.

  3. Consult the Schedule of Classes for COUN 200 class times or come into the Counseling and Advising Center in the Student and Community Services Building for more information.

  4. Use MyPortal to register for Counseling 200 during the new student registration period.

  5. Ask your high school or any other colleges attended to send De Anza a copy of your official transcripts.

  6. To verify your class date, time and location log in to myportal.fhda.edu, click the Students Tab, and follow the View Class Schedule by Term   link under Resources.

** Exceptions for placement tests:
  1. You do not have to take an English placement test if you have completed a college course comparable to EWRT 1A. You must bring in verification that you have completed this course at another college.

  2. You do not have to take the placements tests if you have taken the Advanced Placement testing at your high school and have qualifying scores.
Reasons to take COUN 200: Orientation to College
  • It is required by the state of California that every student receive an orientation to college.
  • Taking COUN 200 is where you will learn what you will need to know to accomplish your academic goal whether you are working towards an AA degree or to transfer to a university.
  • You will learn about general education (GE), major requirements and college degrees.
  • You will learn how to transfer to 4 year colleges like the CSU and UC including how to get guaranteed admission to certain universities like UC Davis, UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz.
  • If you are undecided in your choice of major, you will learn about resources that can help you decide on a major.
  • You will go on a campus tour and learn about important campus resources and services.
  • You will have the chance to make a connection with your COUN 200 instructor who is a counselor and will assist you with your academic planning.
  • You will have the opportunity to make connections with other students in your COUN 200 class.
  • You will learn about De Anza student government and clubs from other students who are active on campus. You will hear from student volunteers advice that they think you should know to make your time at De Anza more enjoyable and productive.
  • You will learn about Financial Aid options and how you can pay for college.
  • You will learn how to select your classes each quarter by completing a Student Educational
The final responsibility for successfully achieving an educational goal rests with the student. Information on-line is designed to be helpful; however, this information changes frequently. It is recommended that students consult catalogs, schedule of classes, counselors/academic advisors, departments and universities to confirm an educational plan.
