New version of Catalyst for 2014-15
Catalyst is the course management system that De Anza College has adopted as its standard. While faculty are free to use other systems, most choose to use Catalyst because of the training and support the college provides.
De Anza faculty and staff are invited to sign up for the hands-on workshops below.
All hands-on workshops will be hosted in the faculty and staff computer lab (room MLC 243 on the second floor) in the new Media and Learning Center (MLC) building, adjacent to the Flint Center parking garage.
Online Teaching with Catalyst
Faculty can use Catalyst to supplement their traditional face-to-face courses, or offer hybrid and/or distance learning courses. If you intend to use Catalyst in your teaching, you are required to complete training first. Interested faculty can contact the Distance Learning Center for details.
Catalyst training starts with an online portion that covers basic Catalyst features as well as information and policies around course development. You can request an account and participate in the online portion of training any time. Please contact David Garrido (firstname.lastname@example.org or 408.864.8970) to sign up for training.
Catalyst training continues with two hands-on workshops. Here are the workshops for this quarter:
Part I: Online Teaching with Catalyst Basic
Tuesday, April 14, 2015, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
This hands-on workshop is part of the required training for any De Anza faculty who will be using Catalyst. In the workshop you will learn to create course content, add resources and activities, and use communication tools.
Part II: Catalyst Assessment Tools
Tuesday, May 5, 2015, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
This second required workshop focuses on assignment, quiz and gradebook features in Catalyst. It is recommended to take the Basic workshop before the assessment tools workshop unless you have prior experience with Moodle.
Effective Practices Showcase
The De Anza Online Teaching and Learning Effective Practices Showcase is your opportunity to see other De Anza faculty give quick demonstrations of teaching ideas and technology they are using successfully in their online, hybrid, and Web-enhanced classes today. In just 90 minutes, you'll walk away with ideas you can apply to teaching your classes. DVD's of previous presentations are available in the Distance Learning Center from David Garrido (email@example.com or 408.864.8970).
If you'd like to be a presenter, please contact David with your 10-minute idea. The showcase will take place in the distance learning classroom in the new Media and Learning Center building, room MLC 255.
Topic: Embedding Basic Skills Support into Online Courses.
Are your students prepared for your courses? We know they “should” be. However, approximately 70 percent of our students come to us with basic skills needs. Learn how to embed a few independent modules for some “just in time” refreshing and/or learning. We have a selection of (mostly) open educational resources that can help your students so that you can spend your time teaching them your course. This session will show how to embed basic skills, including with some of the pilot OEI courses that have done so. Feel free to bring your assignments.
Spring 2015 Showcase date: Wednesday, May 6, 12:30 - 2:00 PM
