Keys to Success:
1. Commitment: Accounting is not hard, but it is hard work. To do well, you should understand that this course requires a serious time commitment.
2. Preparation: To perform adequately in this course, you must have a thorough understanding of the text and the homework materials assigned. It is imperative you read the assigned chapter before attempting quiz and exams. Expect the reading of each Chapter to take at least 2-3 hours to complete.
3. Homework is the secret to doing well in this course. If you are not motivated to do your homework, you are doomed to do poorly in the course. The only way you can learn and understand these concepts is to apply them to problem solving.
4. One of the secrets to success in Accountingreasoning behind the methods: why is it done this way. If you do not understand why, you will have a hard time on the tests because many of the problems on the test will force you to apply what you have learned in new ways. For example, if you have been doing an accounting problem going from A to Z, the test may require that you do a similar problem but in order to solve it you will have to go from Z to A. If you truly know and understand the materials, you will be able to apply what you have learned and approach the material from a new perspective, i.e. backwards.
5. Exams will be based on the textbook, lectures, and homework assigned. Complete the homework not just for the calculations but also for understanding the underlying concepts and principles it is conveying. Understanding and interpreting the use of accounting information is just as important as the calculation of a number. You will be tested on how well you interpret accounting information, not just on, whether you can arrive at the correct calculation of a number.
6. For most people this course requires at least eight hours of study time outside the class hours (online lectures) every week.
7. Short exams – There will be weekly learning assessment quizzes during the quarter. The questions will be on material currently being studied. The quizzes will be graded on how well you are staying current with the course material.
8. PARTICIPATE IN CLASS Discussions at PageOut discussion area.
9. A sense of humor is required.
Objectives
Financial Accounting in 14 words: Study of Business Events and the Effects of Economic Transactions Reported on Financial Statements.
In a general sense, accounting can be defined as an information system that provides reports to stakeholders about the economic activities and condition of a business. The subject material of this course is financial accounting which is primarily concerned with the recording and reporting of economic data and activities for a business. Although such reports provide useful information for managers, they are the primary reports for owners, creditors, governmental agencies, and the public.
The primary objective of this course is to help students learn how accounting meets the information needs of various users by developing and communicating information that is used in decision-making. Accordingly, the expected student outcome is the demonstration that the student can prepare, read, and analyze external financial statements.
Accounting is too important to managers, organizations, and societies to be left to accountants alone. Accounting information is often a basis for decisions. Accounting reports are often the basis on which the effectiveness of stewardship decisions and actions are evaluated.
Textbook
The WileyPLUS site is based on the textbook Accounting Principles, 8th Edition, by Weygandt, Kieso, Kimmel, published by Wiley. There are three options for buying the text and WileyPLUS access code.
Option 1. Buy one-third of the book (Chapters 10-18) from the DeAnza Bookstore in loose-leaf format. This option does not include a registration code for the required online access to WileyPLUS. If you already have a registration code from 1A, use that code. Login using the exact email address that was used previously.
Option 2. If you have not previously purchased a WileyPLUS code, buy the registration code for WileyPLUS when you login to our Accounting 1B site. You will have the option to buy the registration code for WileyPLUS which includes the text in electronic format (e-text) and access to all of the WileyPLUS online material.
Option 3. Buy the entire textbook from another source. In this case, you will still need to buy the registration code for online access to WileyPLUS. This is probably the most expensive option.

Grades
CLASS SCHEDULE AND GRADE CALCULATION
Grade Calculation
WileyPLUS Online Assignments....... 40%
PageOut Discussion area online postings.. 10%
Comprehensive Problem ................... 10%
Comprehensive Final Exam............... 40%
Example: If the total WileyPLUS online assignments equal 440 points and you earn 375 points your percentage is 85% (375/440). If your final exam is 75%, the Comprehensive Problem 1 is complete, and actively participated in online discussions at PageOut throughout the term, then your overall percent for the class would be 84% calculated as follows:
(Wiley 85% x 50%) + (PageOut 10%) + (Final 75%x 40%) + (Comp. Problem 10%) = 84%
A Grade = 90%-100%, B Grade = 80%-89%, C Grade = 70%-79%
D Grade = 60%-69%, F Grade = Below 60%
Statement on Academic Integrity:
It goes without saying that academic integrity is expected from each student. As such, if there is a reasonable basis for concluding that a violation of academic integrity has taken place; all suspected parties would be awarded a course grade of “F”, with a letter to the Dean explaining why this grade was awarded. It will be up to the students involved to convince the instructor that the violation did not take place. (Refer to DeAnza College catalog and class schedule.)
