Description
Critical examination of human growth and development from school age through adolescence with particular attention given to current theoretical and research perspectives. (Also listed as Psychology 10H. Students may enroll in either department, but not both, for credit.)

Requirements
Be prepared to spend at 12-15 hours per week interacting with following the course materials.

1. Orientation: Complete the Online Orientation and submit the student information form by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 25th. The Online Orientation may be found on the Distance Learning Website http://www.deanza.edu/distance by clicking on the link "Online Orientation" and searching for CD-010H-62Z. Pre-registered students who do not complete the online orientation by the deadline will be dropped to make room for students on the wait list.

2. Log in to Catalyst https://catalyst.deanza.edu. the first week of class. Go to "Week 1" and post to "Discussion Forum 1" to get started. You must do this by Friday, September 25th, 5:00 pm. Students who do not post by this deadline will be dropped from the class to make room for students on the waiting list.

3. Videos: The "Stepping Stones" video series supplements the text. You are required to view 12 half-hour videos. These videos are streamed on-line. For instructions on viewing the streamed video lessons go to https://catalyst.deanza.edu. For instructions on renting the videos see Course Materials section below.

4. Discussion Board: This is an interactive board where students will be asked to post answers to a weekly question for the instructor and students to read. You will have to log in to Catalyst every week to answer these discussion forum questions. Read and respond to the questions (new questions will be posted every week). You must post your answer by midnight on Sunday night of the same week to receive credit.

5. Assignments/Exams: There are a total of two written assignments that will require you to work with children and adolescents. There may be smaller writing exercises throughout the course in addition to these two formal papers. There will be three scheduled online examinations. All exams and assignments are submitted on the Catalyst website.

Objectives
This course is an examination of physical, cognitive, social and emotional development from middle childhood through adolescence.

The learning objectives for this course are:

  • To survey theories of child development as they relate to physical, psycho-social and cognitive development in middle childhood and adolescence.
  • To gain understanding of developmental characteristics and behavior during middle years and adolescence through observation, examination and self-reflection.
  • To analyze and relate significant aspects of middle childhood and adolescence to possible behavioral outcomes in later years.
  • To demonstrate understanding of theories of identity formation as they relate to adolescence and later adult skills.
  • To examine ethnic, cultural, language and disability issues as integral factors in all aspects of development.

    Media Availability
    Stepping Stones (Part II) programs (12 half-hour videos). These are available online, on Comcast cable, for viewing at the Library West Computer Lab (LWCL) or for rent via ACT Media.
    Written Assignments
    ASSIGNMENTS: Two written papers that combine observation, interviews and reflection are required in this course. Two of these assignments will ask that you work with children and adolescents, so plan ahead. Both papers must be submitted in order to pass the class. Extra credit assignments may be offered in addition (but not instead) of these assignments.

    In addition the written assignments, you will be required to post your response to a discussion question on the Catalyst website each week. In order to receive full credit, you must post this discussion by the end of the day Sunday of that week. Late responses are accepted for partial credit.

    Detailed information about assignments, guidelines and due dates will be posted on the Catalyst website the first day of the quarter.
    Testing / Grading
    Three quizzes will be given throughout the quarter (online). There are no on-campus exams. The quizzes may consist of multiple-choice and short-answer questions. Tests are open book. No comprehensive final is given. You will have two hours to complete each test. Test scores will be posted on your web page.

    The exam dates will be posted on Catalyst the first week of the quarter. No make-up exams will be given.

    WEEK 11: 3/15-3/21 Emerging Adulthood (Epilogue, Berger). Review Week. Chapters 14,15, and 16 (Adolescence) & Epilogue: Emerging Adulthood. Quiz #3 available online this week. Discussion Forum 11 due by Sunday, March 21st.

    WEEK 12: 3/21-3/26 Finals Week.
    Quiz #3 must be completed by Friday, March 26th. All assignments must be submitted by this deadline in order to pass the course. Discussion Forum 12 is optional.
    Cheating
    Policy on Copying and Cheating:Students who submit the work of others as their own or cheat on exams or other assignments will receive a failing grade in the course and will be reported to college authorities.
    Library West Computer Lab(LWCL)

    The Library West Computer Lab offers support services for Distance Learning students including: open computer lab with Internet access, stations for viewing videotapes and videotape checkout.

    A photo I.D. card is required to check out materials or use computers in the Library West Computer Lab, use computers in other campus computer labs.

    To check out videotapes from the OML a Distance Learning Center I.D. Card is also required

    The Distance Learning I.D. cards are available from the Distance Learning Center.

    Video Viewing Options
    1. Watch at home during the cable TV broadcasts.
    2. Tape record your video programs during the telecasts and view them when convenient.
    3. View programs in the De Anza College Open Media Lab.
    4. Check out tapes from the Open Media Lab to view overnight at home.
      • SMART DASB Card required. The Smart Card Office is located on the lower level of the Hinson Center (408-864-5551).
      • DLC ID Card required (available at the De Anza College Distance Learning Center, LC 107).
      • One tape at a time may be checked out for 48 hours. No renewals are allowed.
      • Return tapes to Open Media Lab or in the drop box outside of Learning Center West (please report any videotape technical problems).
      • Late fines: $2.00/day (maximum fine-$25.00); replacement/lost tape charge: $25.00/tape.
    ACT Media
    ACT, Inc. rents full sets of De Anza College telecourse videotapes to registered distance learning students. Students may use the tapes for the full quarter in which they are enrolled in the course. Orders are taken by telephone and shipped directly to the student. Online ordering is also available. For students with a high speed Internet connection and a PC, some courses are available in video streaming format. Check the ACT web site for details.

Research databases include: LEXIS NEXIS Academic, Encyclopedia Britannica Online and a Practice Test Database which contains Nursing Exams, TOEFL Preparation, College Entrance Exams, and many more.
    To use the article or research databases from an off campus computer, log in with your 14 digit library number or eight digit student id number. These instructions are repeated on the first page of the library website along with descriptions of all the online resources provided.
