A practical study of the operations and essential skills required in small and start-up businesses. Emphasis on the opportunities and problems faced by entrepreneurs in meeting competition, purchasing, selling, staffing and financingand independent business. This course will prepare students for developing business plans.

Welcome. My name is Dan Salah, and I am a member of the business faculty at De Anza College. I teach courses in Business Administration and Accounting. I have been teaching at De Anza College since 2001. I left the private sector to teach instead, and I really enjoy it. Before teaching I held numerous finance, strategy, and management positions in the corporate world, and owned a business employing over 20 people.

By the end of the course, student should be able to:
1. Examine the steps required, the support available, and the tactics commonly employed by entrepreneurs starting a business.
2. Critically evaluate business plans in terms of feasibility, investment potential, risk, and completeness.

Note: Do not get an international edition of this textbook. Also, be aware that the 3rd edition of this textbook has been published, but I am staying with the 2nd edition so that students can purchase used books.
50% of your overall grade is based on your written participation in 10 Discussion Forums.
Optional Extra Credit Final Essay (8 Points). The student has the option of answering a final exam essay question
for up to 8 points of extra credit. This assignment will be available at the end of the term.
