Locating and evaluating online information contained in national and international sources on the World Wide Web.

Requirements
Advisories: EWRT 200 and READ 200 (or LART 200) or ESL 261, 262, and 263.

Students must have their own e-mail account and access to the Internet.
Objectives
1.Learn to use a library catalog to search for books, electronic books and
non-print materials.

2.Practice searching techniques using commercial search engines such as
Google and Yahoo!

3.Gain awareness of noncommercial search tools.

4.Practice using subscription databases to locate journal, magazine, and
newspaper articles.

5.Gain awareness of using local, national and international newspapers as
research tools.

6.Learn to read and recognize the necessary elements for citing information
from journals, newspaper articles, and web pages.

7.Develop critical thinking skills that can be applied to evaluating Web pages.

This course has five assignments and a final exam. Answers to the
assignments are short, brief answers to questions involving various websites.
The final exam is also online and involves true/false and multiple choice
questions.

Answers to the assignments and the final are submitted within the Catalyst
web based program.

Handouts
LCEN 50, Introduction to Online Research is an online class. There are no
handouts. Students will go to the De Anza College Catalyst website, enter their
I.D. and look for the course website.

There are 5 assignments and a final exam. Each is worth 50 points for a total
of 300 points.
A = 100 - 93% - minimum of 279 points
B = 92 - 85% - minimum of 255 points
C = 84 - 76% - minimum of 228 points
D = 75 - 69% - minimum of 207 points

This is a graded course.
Assignments Schedule
There are five assignments and a final exam for this class. Each assignment has
a due date. These are posted on the class website. The final exam also has a
due date which is the Thursday of finals week. The exact due date is posted on
the class website.
Cheating
Policy on Copying and Cheating:Students who submit the work of others as their own or cheat on exams or other assignments will receive a failing grade in the course and will be reported to college authorities.

  • Article Databases and Research Databases The library subscribes to several electronic databases which provide access to thousands of full-text journals, newspapers, and magazine articles. Research databases include: LEXIS NEXIS Academic, Encyclopedia Britannica Online and a Practice Test Database which contains Nursing Exams, TOEFL Preparation, College Entrance Exams, and many more.
To use the article or research databases from an off campus computer, log in with your 14 digit library number or eight digit student id number. These instructions are repeated on the first page of the library website along with descriptions of all the online resources provided.
