Critical examination of human growth and development from conception to middle childhood with particular attention given to current theoretical and research perspectives. (Also listed as Psychology 10G. Students may enroll in either department, but not both, for credit.)

Be prepared to spend at 12-15 hours per week interacting with following the course materials.
1. Orientation: Complete the Online Orientation and submit the student information form by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 10. The Online Orientation may be found on the Distance Learning Website http://www.deanza.edu/distance
by clicking on the link "Online Orientation" and searching for CD-010G-62z OR PSYC-010G-62z. Pre-registered students who do not complete the online orientation by the deadline will be dropped to make room for students on the wait list. This deadline will be strictly enforced.
2. Log in to Catalyst https://catalyst.deanza.edu
. the first week of class. Go to "Week 1" and post to "Discussion Forum 1" to get started. You must do this by Friday, January 10, 5:00 pm. Students who do not post by this deadline will be dropped from the class to make room for students on the waiting list.
3. MyPsychLab with MyVirtualChild: This online resource will supplement our course materials. This is included in the textbook package you can purchase at the bookstore (Child Development, by Arnett & Maynard, ISBN: 0205987729). We are using a new textbook this quarter and I do not recommend you buy a different book as the exams and material will be based on the Arnett & Maynard book. I recommend that you purchase your textbook from the DeAnza bookstore. If you buy your textbook elsewhere you will need to make sure it includes access to MyVirtualChild. 4. Discussion Board: This is an interactive board where students will be asked to post answers to a weekly question for the instructor and students to read. You will have to log in to Catalyst every week to answer these discussion forum questions. Read and respond to the questions (new questions will be posted every week). You must post your answer by midnight on Sunday night of the same week to receive credit.
5. Assignments/Exams: There are a total of three written assignments that will require you to work with children and adults. There may be smaller writing exercises throughout the course in addition to these formal papers. There will be three scheduled online examinations. All exams and assignments are submitted on the Catalyst website. Check Discussion Board for announcements. Please respond to the first questions by Friday, January 10, by 5:00 pm, in order to stay in the class.
This course is an examination of physical, cognitive, social and emotional development from conception to age five.
To survey theories of child development as they relate to physical, psycho-social and cognitive development from conception to early childhood.
The learning objectives for this course are:
To gain understanding of developmental characteristics and behavior from pre-conception to infancy and early childhood through observation, interviews, case study analysis and self-reflection.
To demonstrate understanding of major theories in developmental psychology as they relate to children
To examine ethnic, cultural, language and disability issues as integral factors in all aspects of development.

Required: My Virtual Child. An access code is included with your textbook if you purchase it at the DeAnza bookstore. If you are purchasing your textbook elsewhere, make sure that it includes access to MyVirtualChild. You can also buy access to the program directly on www.myvirtualchild.com .
Three written papers that combine observation, interviews and reflection are required in this course. Two of these assignments will ask that you work with children, so plan ahead. All papers must be submitted in order to pass the class. Extra credit assignments may be offered in addition (but not instead) of these assignments.
Testing / Grading
Three quizzes will be given throughout the quarter (online). There are no on-campus exams. The quizzes may consist of multiple-choice and short-answer questions. Tests are open book. No comprehensive final is given. You will have at least two hours to complete each test.
