Part 3 - General Classroom Considerations

Providing Effective Accommodations


Faculty members are charged with ensuring that students with disabilities in their classrooms have equitable access to the educational experience, but they have both the DSPS Division and the student as resources. In many cases, accommodations are provided for which the faculty member has little direct responsibility, such as a textbook in Braille (Although it is critical that the instructor has communicated to the Bookstore the selected textbook in a timely manner). Sometimes the instructor simply adjusts for an alternative delivery method, such as a sign language interpreter in class. In other cases, the faculty member is more involved. The instructor might provide a copy of lecture notes or give an alternate assignment.  Some accommodations require significant and timely interaction with the faculty as in making arrangements for test accommodations (See Test Accommodations).

In many cases, accommodations and services are flexible ways to help students achieve course objectives using simple, commonsense approaches. (For lists and links of General and Instructional accommodations and services,  see PART 1 of this GUIDE or refer to the specific disability classroom strategies  in PART 4 and PART 5).  If it appears that an accommodation will require an inordinate amount of time or effort, the instructor should consult with DSS.

Instructors retain the right, based on course outline and syllabus, to assess how well the student has mastered course material and to issue a grade accordingly.

Keep in mind that accommodations are designed and authorized to ensure access and equitable participation but do not guarantee success.

 

Once a disability has been verified by DSS, an instructor should provide only those accommodations and services that:

  • Are requested by the student
  • Authorized by the DSS for that course in that quarter.
  • Do not compromise the fundamental nature of the discipline or the established academic standards of the course or program.

Students registered with the DSPS Division have met with a DSS Counselor or LD Specialist to assess their accommodation needs. These are determined on a case-by-case basis in a dialogue with each student and must be supported by disability documentation. If there is a question about a requested accommodation, a disagreement, or other problem, faculty members should contact DSS.
