Meet Sarah CorraoSarah Corrao, Financial Aid & Scholarships Office assistant, says working in the Financial Aid Office gives her the opportunity to see into the lives of many different De Anza College students. "There are a whirlwind of stories, lives, needs and desires, and it's a great feeling to be able to help students find solutions to their problems," Corrao says.
Corrao administers scholarship operations, assists students in formulating and declaring their educational goals, oversees and updates the scholarship Web site and listserv messages, and presents scholarship workshops on and off campus. "Sarah has been a real jewel in our office," says her nominator and Director of Financial Aid Cindy Castillo. "She is constantly in 'learning mode' and masters new tasks with enthusiasm. She is one of our webmasters and keeps our Web pages current. She has recently been instrumental in our conversion to a 100% online scholarship application process."
Castillo says Corrao works with students with patience and empathy. "She often has to be the bearer of bad news to a student who is not selected for a scholarship or is disqualified, but she spends time with each student so they understand and, further, they know how to fix it or how to proceed," Castillo says.
Carrao earned her master's degree while working full time and has participated on several campus committees. "She is creative, thoughtful, sympathetic, and yet, realistic when working with both students and co-workers. She volunteers for new tasks and new experiences within financial aid and we all really appreciate her hard work on behalf of our students," Castillo says.
Carrao says she enjoys working as part of a team. "I feel supported in my job by all of my wonderful colleagues. I know that they will be there for me when I need them, and I in turn will be there for them," she says.
