Nila Nine, April 2013


Nila Nine, Dining Services operations coordinator, came to the United States in the spring of 2004 from Cambodia. “I started working at the Campus Center in 2004 as a student assistant and ended my job when I graduated from De Anza in 2007,” Nine says. He transferred to San Jose State and graduated from its hospitality program in 2010.

Patti Whelan is the senior secretary for Disability Support Services. She provides vital, day-to-day support for the DSS program and is the first contact for her division. “Patti is committed to bringing a high level of customer service to students, instructors and staff,” says her nominator Berta Pace, division administrative assistant for Business & Computer Systems. Julie Ceballos is one of those colleagues you know you can depend on. “Over the seven plus years I've known and worked with Julie, she has consistently demonstrated her willingness to help anyone across campus who needs her Web expertise,” says her nominator, Lois Jenkins, Marketing/Communications program coordinator. “Learning how to use OmniUpdate for campus websites has been much less difficult with her cheerful coaching and guidance than I nervously anticipated.” Read more...

Dennis Shannakian, January 2013

Dennis Shannakian began working at De Anza College as a student employee in April 1997 and became a full-time classified professional in September 1999 in the Office of College Life. He has served as a Classified Senate senator and president, chief steward in SEIU (the previous classified union), and a member of the board of ACE (Association of Classified Employees, the current union). Shari Pasquali, program coordinator and certifying official for Veteran Services, began her journey at De Anza College five years ago when she was hired to assist in the Evaluations Department of Admissions and Records. Pasquali also worked at the front counter assisting students in A&R, and it wasn’t long before she was appointed as the certifying official in Veteran Services for the college. Read more. . .

William Madden, academic adviser in Counseling for the past five years, says he feels honored to work with students and fortunate to have had truly professional and considerate colleagues. Melodie Cheney, October 2012

For the last 15 years, Melody Cheney has been greeting and helping students in the Admissions and Records Office as an A&R assistant. She became a permanent employee with the college in 1997, having started in 1992 as a work-study student in OTI, reading to and recording for visually impaired students from Disabled Students Programs and Services.
