Meet Karen Villalba, Employee of the Month

Karen Villalba When Karen Villalba came to De Anza College in 1996, she was looking for a new career. She started taking child development classes, found her passion and never left.
"I started subbing for both Foothill and De Anza's Child Development centers," Villalba said. "In spring of 2000, De Anza's infant-toddler program was launched and I was fortunate and privileged to be offered a part-time faculty position working in their first infant room."
Villalba continued working as a part-time teacher until fall 2006, at which time she became the coordinator for the student associate teachers. "When the opportunity came along for assistant director, I applied and was selected for the position," Villalba said.
Child development teacher Linda Conroy said Villalba deserves the Employee of the Month Award because of her leadership, organization and many sacrifices she has made this past year at the Child Development Center. "In light of the fact that the Child Development Center has been without a director since last summer, Karen has assumed many of the responsibilities for the running of the center that would fall to the director of the program," Conroy said. "Amidst all of her responsibilities and the high level of stress related to her position, she always stays focused and works with the CDC administration team to make sure that the center runs as smooth as possible."
Villalba said that throughout the years her passion for children and their families has continued to grow. She holds an A.A. degree in child development from De Anza and a B.A. in human development from Pacific Oaks College in Pasadena.
