This course will explore the systems of astronomy developed by ancient cultures of the Americas, Europe, the Mediterranean region and the Near East. Students will learn how ancient Mesopotamian societies predicted eclipses and how the ancient Maya tracked the movement of Venus across the night sky. The class will also examine how ancient Islamic sciences gave rise to our modern constellation systems, how structures such as Stonehenge were developed to measure time, and how ancient Polynesian societies relied upon astronomy to navigate the Pacific Ocean.
