Class Schedule / Homework Schedule

This page tells you what we will do in each class and what to do for homework each night.

(Note: This schedule is tentative and subject to change).

WEEK 1

Mon. 9/21: Introduction to the course: go over syllabus, class expectations, assignments

HW: Re-read syllabus, class / homework schedule.  Write down any questions you have; Fill out Student Information Form; Email Katie a paragraph about yourself

Wed. 9/23: Turn in Student Information Form; Introduction to the Reader’s Journal; Introduction to Unit 1: “Defining American”   

HW: MoA: Read pp. 48-63; 77-85: “They’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught” (Konig); “I Want to Be Miss America” (Alvarez); “Do I Look Like Public Enemy Number One?” (Ali); “How Boys Become Men” (Katz); “Men Peek Out from the Cave” (Zane)
Choose 2-3 words you don’t know from the readings and bring them to class
Write a Journal Entry


WEEK 2
Mon. 9/28:
Discuss journal entries in groups; Make Vocabulary List 1; Discuss Unit 1 readings    HW: Define Vocabulary List 1 words; TBA

Wed. 9/30: Go over Vocabulary List 1 words; Discuss Unit 1 readings (continued); Introduce Essay 1

HW: Study for Quiz 1 (Vocabulary List 1); Write a Journal Entry; Essay 1: prewriting / planning

 

WEEK 3
Mon. 10/5:
Quiz 1 (Vocabulary List 1); Share journal entries in groups; Essay 1 (first draft workshop) 

HW: Essay 1 (revise into 2nd draft)

Wed. 10/7: Go over Quiz 1 results; Essay 1 (second draft workshop) + turn in to Katie; Introduce Unit 2 readings (“How Others Define Us; How We Define Ourselves”)

HW: Unit 2 readings--MoA: pp. 97-130: “Dying to Be Bigger” (H.D.) “The Eye of the Beholder” (Suh); Beauty: When the Other Dancer Is the Self (Walker); “Meet Marnie” (Wood); “Venus Envy” (McLaughlin)
Choose 2-3 words you don’t know from the readings and bring them to class
