CLP 75: College Major & Career Options

Identify your compatible college majors and career options by completing a variety of self-assessment inventories. Examine how individual, family, social, and cultural perspectives influence the college major and career decision-making process. Review college major and career myths, the purpose and structure of higher education, and organizational structures found in employment settings.

Class Information/Course Syllabus

This class is a community, which is built on mutual respect and appreciation for learning. Disruptive behavior is unacceptable and will result in a student having to leave class or being dropped if the behavior continues. Please silence your cell phone before you enter class! Maintaining good communication with the instructor is important in CLP 75. Contact me via email, telephone, or in person. Please talk to me as soon as you have any questions, concerns, or personal issues that may affect your class performance. If you are a student with a disability and would like to discuss special accommodations, please talk to me as soon as possible.

Advisory
Please be aware the advisory for this course are LART 211 (EWRT 211 and READ 211) or ESL 272 and ESL 273.  Even though there are no enforced prerequistes for this course, students are expected to complete reading and writing assignments at the advisory level.  Points will be deducted for misspellings and grammatical errors.  Please utilize the Writing & Reading Center (WRC) for your submitted papers.  Students can also take advantage of the free online tutoring. Just login to MyPortal, go to the Students tab, and find the Smarthinking link.  You can work with a tutor live (hours vary by subject) or post a question or piece of writing for a response.  For more information, go tohttp://deanza.edu/studentsuccess/onlinetutoring.html.

Required Text & Course Materials
None Required.  Although there is no required text, you do need to print out the weekly course handouts prior to class.  Failure to bring these handouts may result in deduction of grade points.  

Transfer Information/General Education Requirements
CLP 75 is transferrable to the CSU campuses only. This course does NOT fulfill any General Education requirements for both the Associates Degree and for transfer.  If you would like to take an equivalent course that would meet General Education requirements for the CSU General Education, I would advise you to take CLP 70.

Late Adds
In rare instances when a student adds a course late, the student is responsible for coursework missed.  In addition, missed classes will be counted against the attendance policy for the course. 

 Course Outcomes & Objectives

Student Learning Outcomes (SLO)
Develop and evaluate college major and career options by analyzing a multitude of factors involved in career development such as: personality, values, skills, interests, attitudes, family, and culture.

Course Objectives
Identify your compatible college majors and career options by completing a variety of self assessments inventories. 

Examine how individual, family, social, and cultural perspectives influence the college major and
career decision making process.

Review college major and career myths, the purpose and structure of higher education, and organizational structures found in employment settings.

Graded Assignments

Graded Assignments
All assignments must be typed and submitted in class on the due date. Assignments that are submitted late will be docked a letter grade each class day it is late. Assignments that are emailed or handwritten will also be docked a letter grade.  

Attendance & Class Participation
It is mandatory that you attend every class session. Only (2) two absences will be allowed. I suggest you hold them for use in case of illness, emergency, car trouble, etc.  Once you have exceeded your 2 absences, the instructor reserves the right to drop you from the class and/or deduct 5 points per class meeting missed. Contact me via email if you have to miss class so that I am familiar with your circumstances.

If it is impossible for you to attend a class session, you will still be responsible to get the information that was covered and complete the homework assigned before the next class session. I strongly encourage you to exchange telephone numbers with your classmates, so those persons can fill you in on the assignments and material covered on the day you missed. Be on time to class! If you show up to class late or leave early, it will be counted as a half of an absence (meaning two tardies equals an absence). 

Students are required to actively listen, participate in discussions, and interactive group exercises. Also, students must respect anyone with views that differ from their own, not interrupt others, or engage in disruptive behavior. Engaging in disruptive behavior may result in dismissal from the class and possibly reported to the Dean of Student Development.

Grading is based on an 100 point scale, but is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor. Grade percentages at the cusp of two letter grades will receive a designated plus/minus grade (i.e. 89% will receive a B+ and 90% will receive an A-).  There are no extra credit opportunities available, so please complete the required assignments completely and on-time.  

Grade Disputes
All graded paperwork for the quarter will be shredded a month after the class has ended.  If you would like your graded papers, please email me to set-up an appointment to retrieve these documents.  Once these documents have been shredded, there will be no opportunities for grade disputes.
