Required text: Development: Infancy Through Adolescence by Steinberg
The required syllabus may be found in the bookstore. The brown scantron No. 2052 is used for each test.
Please bring a picture of yourself by the second class meeting to glue into your folder.
Catalog Course Description: Critical examination of human growth and development from conception to early childhood with particular attention to current theoretical and research perspectives.
Course Requirements: Attendance and class participation is a requirement. Students who are absent for more than 2 class sessions, without calling the instructor may be dropped from the class. Arriving late is disruptive to the instructor and the students in the class. Last day to drop with a "W" is Friday March 2nd. It is the student's responsibility to drop the class before this date otherwise a grade will be assigned according to the points earned. Participation includes arriving on time, actively participating with the group, and remaining for the entire class.
A number of videos will be shown during this course to illustrate research in progress and new concepts discussed in class. Treat videos as you would lectures by taking notes. Videos serve as a good basis for many exam questions.
5 exams will be given throughout the quarter. 4 exams will be counted as part of your grade. If you are ill or cannot take the quiz on the given date, it is the student's responsibility to inform the instructor prior to the exam. There are no make up exams. If you miss one then you will be required to take the final at the end of the quarter. The other option is that you may take the final and have the lowest exam dropped.
Evaluation: Grades based on percentage of points earned. I teach many students per year, each of whom have multiple grades. It is inevitable that an occasional grade will be misplaced or misreported. Therefore, it is imperative that you keep all the work returned to you in your folder and a continual record of your scores.
Grading:The percentage system for determining grades on all papers.

Student Success:
Students who do not understand English, or who need help in understanding the lectures or demonstrations will be responsible for securing assistance in interpreting the instruction. There are many resources available on campus. The Writing and Reading Center in ATC room 309 helps students work on their writing and reading assignments. Call (408) 864-5840 for an appointment.
Class Room Respect: This involves coming to class on time and not leaving until the end of class. It is very disruptive to have students leaving the room and then returning during a lecture. If you need to leave please sit in the back so as not to disturb others. Please take care of your personal needs before attending class.
Extra Credit: Study groups meet once a week for 50 minutes in the second building in the CDC. One point will be awarded for each session attended. This is worth 10 extra points.
Out of respect for other students please turn off all electronic devices while in the classroom. Text messaging is reserved for outside the classroom. Students found using their phones during class time will be asked to leave the class.
Late students: After the roll has been taken a student will be considered absent. If you are absent for more than two classes you can be dropped from the class. Coming late to class is not acceptable. Two late arrivals equals one absence.
