Bus 96: Principles of Management

The purpose of this advanced course is to introduce the student to the roles and responsibilities of managers in organizations. The class emphasizes experiential learning and self-inquiry to explore the job of a manager, including the managerial environment, the five functions of management (planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling), decision-making, effective communications, and management ethics.  This online multimedia course uses video scenarios and simulations to allow you to practice and discuss managerial situations with your classmates. Several students have told me that they were able to apply concepts they learned immediately at their place of work!

De Anza offers a Certificate of Achievement and an Associates Degree in Management. Principles of Management is a core requirement for those programs and the Business Administration programs.  It is also an elective for our Marketing and Business Administration programs.  Please note that it is recommended that students take this class as one of the very last in their program or before they transfer.

In this class you will get an opportunity to evaluate your own level of preparation for management. One of the tools we will use is the Meyers-Briggs (or Jung) Personality Type assessment. Most people really enjoy this revealing exercise!
