ESL 223: Reading for Comprehension and Pleasure

This class is designed for the intermediate level but all are welcome. In the fall of 2009, we read A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park.

Place: LSC/ATC 304

Prerequisites: English as a Second Language 244
Required Materials: Bring a notebook!
Recommended Text: An English/English dictionary

Course Description:
ESL 223 is a 1/2 unit reading practice and comprehension class. We will meet for 8 weeks, starting week 3, and each small group session will last for 1 1/2 hours. You will use your English actively in a small group setting to discuss a short novel. Through oral and written practice, you will become more comfortable talking about what you read and picking out the main ideas. You should put in about 2 hours of reading preparation a week for this class. You will have a chance to do the following activities:

• Respond to questions asking you to think critically about what you read.
• Share your response to what you read in group discussion and in note form.
• Practice reading sections of the novel aloud in a small group.
• Practice giving short summaries of what you read both orally and in writing.
• Learn to guess the meanings of new vocabulary from the context of the reading.
• Keep a vocabulary notebook where you can practice using new words.
