Joni Hayes-Lamprey, a budget
analyst in Finance and College Services, five years of service at De Anza
and a total of 16 years with the district
Nomination: “Joni is the ‘go to’ person
on campus when you have a budget/financial/system issue. She is extremely
helpful to anyone who comes to her; and she provides detailed, clear
answers. Her assistance is always cherished.”
Her contributions: “I see myself as playing
a behind-the-scenes supporting role for administrators, faculty and
staff. I provide a variety of financial reports and documents that assist
them in making decisions and carrying out their own projects. I love
what I do because it’s a perfect fit for my skills and abilities.
I’ve always enjoyed working with people and with numbers and feel
fortunate to work with such a terrific group of people. Each day I look
forward to coming to work.”

Kevin Metcalf, instructional
multimedia/Web administrator for three years
Nomination: “Kevin performs tasks with enthusiasm,
determination and brilliance. He was instrumental in automating office
procedures that allowed the Distance Learning Center to maintain services
during budget and personnel reductions. In addition, Kevin volunteers
for work that is above and beyond, and he’s both joyful and a
calming personality within the work group.”
His contributions: “In an average day, I divide my
time between providing technical support to students accessing our courses
from around the world, helping faculty evaluate new technology for their
courses, coding secure database wrappers for our internal management
system, and updating our Web site. It’s exciting to be in Distance
Learning, literally the cutting edge of educational technology. My co-workers
and I are currently working together to build a real-time repository
of all relevant course data that will benefit students and faculty.”

Diane Hawley, textbook buyer,
hired part time in 1995 and made permanent seven years ago
Nomination: “I found out only a few weeks before fall
quarter that I was going to teach a course that was new to me. Diane
stopped what she was doing and did everything possible to get me a copy
of the textbook quickly and also suggested supplemental references until
a copy arrived. In addition, Diane was so pleasant and seemed to really
care. Helping instructors to be well prepared and making sure the texts
are on the shelves for students are of monumental importance to De Anza
and to the individual student.”
Her contributions: “I enjoy being in education without
the daily lesson plans of a teacher. I believe that staff members in
the Bookstore provide a vital service to our students’ education.
While a book is not necessarily a requirement in every course, it certainly
augments the course. You can keep learning from it long after leaving
the classroom. I still refer to books from more than 20 years ago. I
enjoy seeing ‘my students’ and ‘my student employees’
go on to universities and other business opportunities and especially
enjoy seeing older students return to college. You are never too old
to learn.”
