Fred Marcus SOC 1 Introduction to Sociology

SOC 1 Introduction to Sociology

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

In a rapidly changing society we find ourselves making decisions that not only  affect the course of our future, but that of our families and friends, communities and government.  A sociological understanding of one's behavior and its place in society can prove an invaluable tool in helping make those decisions. This course is a critical introduction to the field of sociology.  It will cover a diversified area of inquiry. Topics  include: socialization and identity; culture and social structure; deviance and social control; minority-majority relations; institutions of the family, religion, education; and stratification and inequality.  It will also examine and compare major theories and research methods that distinguish the field from common sense and popular ideological approaches.

BROAD COURSE GOALS:

  1. To provide a sociological view of the interrelationship between the individual and society
  2. To provide an open forum wherein students are encouraged to participate in class discussion.
  3. To expose the students to the realities associated with theoretical concepts. This will be accomplished via class exercises, films, and possible fieldwork (should the opportunity arise).
