Piper McNulty has a BA in Anthropology from Scripps/Pomona Colleges, an MA in ESL from the School for International Training, and an MA in Intercultural Relations from The McGregor School of Antioch University (in consortium with the Intercultural Communication Institute) in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

As a corporate trainer, Ms. McNulty has specialized in preparing Japanese business people to work with Americans.  She has conducted similar training for Saudis, Kuwaitis, Israelis, Koreans, Vietnamese and Chinese. Corporate clients have included: Procter and Gamble, Intel, Amdahl, Memorex, Lam Research, Boston Scientific, Lifescan, General Foods, C-Itoh, Panasonic, Sony, Morgan Guarantee Trust, the YWCA of Santa Clara Valley and El Camino Hospital. Piper has also taught ESL to students from countries around the world, and has lived and worked in Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico, San Francisco and New York City. In addition to teaching at De Anza College, she teaches Business Communication Across Cultures at UCSC Extension.

Ms. McNulty is a founding member of the Citizens of Cupertino Cross Cultural Consortium (5C's) and co-author of The Culture Puzzle: Cross-Cutural Communication for ESL. She developed "38 Critical Incidents" for the Refugee Women's Program in San Francisco and De Anza's OTI program. She was the recent Chair of the Intercultural Communication Interest Section (ICIS) of TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages), speaks frequently on IC at ESL teacher conferences and conducts staff development workshops in intercultural communication for FACCC and other programs around the state.
