Week 10
M 3/7 Q&A / counter argument/ persuasive speech preparation/reflection essays due/ week 1 surveys
Review questions due (does not have to be in essay form)
Respond to the following questions

1.
Define and give examples of propositions of fact, value, and policy.
Your examples should be based on your own persuasive speech topic that
you will present for your final presentation. (Note--for this question
you do not have to use essay form.)
Here is one set of
examples: (remember all three examples should be based on the same
topic, and you also need to define fact, value & policy which is
not included in this example)

  • Recycling is not cost effective. (fact)
  • It is better to reduce and reuse than to recycle. (value)
  • You should use canvas reusable bags when shopping for groceries. (policy)
 2. Identify your proposition.
List your main points/arguments.
List at least one counterargument.
Identify your organizational pattern (statement of reasons, problem-solution, Monroe's Motivated Sequence, refutation,  cause-effect).

I will review your proposition, arguments, and counterargument(s) and return these to you with my comments. This will help you with your persuasive speech outline drafts which are due Wed of wed 3/7

Sample Survey
Review the sample survey and prepare one based on your own speech topic.
-Place your name and class hour at the top of the page.
-Write your proposition as shown on the sample.
   - Q #1 should be the same on everyone's outline
To what extent do you agree with this proposition? 1-2-3-4-5-6...10  Why?
   -Prepare 4-6 additional questions.
-Have someone review your survey to see that it makes sense to him/her.

-Print out 30 copies to distribute in class. We will fill surveys out
in class and return them to you before the end of the class hour. I
need one blank copy of your survey to grade.
-First week speakers will hand out their surveys on Monday.
-Second week speakers will hand out their surveys Tuesday.

Reflection Essay
Keeping in mind that true strength and learning are found not in perfection,
but in understanding our own limitations, reflect on your
informative speech presentation and review your informative speech
feedback from peers and instructor. Remember we are trying to learn
from our experiences, keep doing what is working well, and not make the
same mistakes. Write a 1-page double-spaced essay
on what you learned from viewing your video and from the feedback.
Include the following: (10 points)

- what did you do well that you want to continue to do?

- what specifically do you plan to work on to improve your next presentation?

- what one thing will make the biggest difference?
- how do you plan to make improvements?
- what is your biggest fear about giving your next speech

Hi students,  Please review the sample racism outline and begin working on your own persuasive speech outlines. Notice I have highlighted all the important elements that meet the assignment requirements. You may want to highlight these in your outline as well so you know you have met all the requirements.
