Introduction to Music: From Rock to Rap

Final Exam:  Tuesday the 22nd of March at 4:00
Office hours: M, W,  10:00 to 10:30, F 9:30-10:30,  in A-29.  Please make an appointment.  I can also meet with students before class as I will usually be in class early to set up. 

Course Description: An introduction to music through rock music, tracing its beginnings in the early 1950s to the present. Various rock styles will be related to the historical trends and events of the time period being studied; listening techniques; use of fundamental concepts including form, style, musical media, textures and acquaintance with and comparison of musical examples from various styles.   The successful student will employ a basic vocabulary of common music terms to describe observations of recorded and live music.

Required Text: "The History of Rock and Roll",  Any Edition, by Thomas E. Larson. Dubuque, Iowa: Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company.

Dropping the Class: Dropping is the responsibility of the student. The last day to drop a course with no record is January 18th.  The last day to drop a course with a "W" recorded is February 26thThese dates are enforced by the college.  

Prerequisites:

There are absolutely no musical prerequisites for Music 1-D.  However, English Writing 211 and Reading 211 (or Language Arts 211), or English as a Second Language 272 and 273 is advised. 

Grading:
Quizzes (10 of them)----100pts. total  (Extra credit points will be available on some of the quizzes)
Concert Report ( 2 Concerts, 1 report)----50pts.
Oral Presentation---- 30pts.
Class Participation/ In Class Assignments (These assignments cannot be made-up)----20pts.  (Extra credit points will be available with the in-class assignments)
Final Exam (The exam is comprehensive and will take place on the last day of class.)------50pts.

Total points:  250pts.
98%-100% = A+ 93%-97%= A 90%-92% = A-
87%-89% = B+ 83%-86% = B 80%-82% = B-
77%-79% = C+ 70%-76% = C
67%-69%= D+ 63%- 66%= D 60%-62% = D-
59% or lower = F

Quizzes: Quizzes will be in the form of true/false, multiple choice, short answer and essay questions. Students are allowed one makeup quiz for the quarter. 

Class participation: Students will receive 1 point  for each full week class attended. Arriving late, leaving early, talking during class, falling asleep in class, etc. will result in loss of points.

In-Class Assignments: These assignments will be done during class time. There is no makeup for these assignments.

Oral Presentation: Students are required to present an oral presentation on an artist, or group of their choice (however the topic must first be okayed  by the instructor first). 

Concerts Report: This is one report on 2 different concerts. One concert must be a "classical concert" and one either jazz, non-Western, blues, pop or rock. This is a report on your observations and not a research paper. Comment on the listening experience as well as the overall experience. You must include: who performed, when/where they performed. This report is basically a comparison of the two different kinds of concerts you attended. You will need to do research into local concerts available. The concerts must take place during the quarter you are enrolled in the class. 

Report Details: The length of the main body for each report must be at least 3-7 full pages. Your report will be considered incomplete if you include a 3 inch margin on the first page or if the 3rd page is only ¾ full. The title page with your name, instructor's name, date and any other important information you wish to include, should be a separate page. Again, the length of your report must be at least 3-7 full pages. All reports must be double spaced as this allows room for comments to be written on your paper. Use 12-point Times New Roman font with 1 inch margins (top, bottom, left and right) otherwise points will be deducted from your report (a full page of font 14 is not a full page).

Plagiarism/Cheating: Don't do it. You will receive an "F" on the assignment or the quiz/exam. I can very easily verify if you have copy information from another source. Please do not do it.

Receiving an "INC":  In the event of an emergency situation , where by a student misses the final, the last assignment or something of that nature, students can receive an incomplete so that the missing work may be made-up within a time frame discussed between the instructor and the student. An incomplete will not be granted because of poor classroom performance or missed classroom participation.  Additionally, the missing work must be completed by the following quarter of the academic year and must include some written documentation for the change of grade from the recorded incomplete.  An incomplete will only be granted if the student has documentation to substantiate their personal situation.
