Staff Development Sessions
As part of our grant project, we are partnering with APALI and ICCE to hold 10 staff development sessions (5 in the 2008-2009 school year, and 5 in the 2009-2010 school year) to help faculty and staff gain insight into how to support our AAPI students and help them flourish.

Staff Development Event: Decolonization & Filipino Indigenous Values

Workshop Description:
Through the process of
learning about and experiencing decolonization through discussion and
activities, participants will develop an understanding of the uniqueness
of the Filipino experience in relationship to Western culture and
history.
Participants will be able to locate their own Filipino students
within a larger historical framework, and be able to utilize activities
they learn in the workshop to teach their own students
about the decolonization process.
Workshop Leader: Elenita Strobel, Sonoma State University
Leny Mendoza Strobel is Associate Professor of American Multicultural Studies at Sonoma State University. She is the author of Coming Full Circle: The Process of Decolonization Among Post-1965 Filipino Americans (Giraffe Books, 2001) and A Book of Her Own: Words and Images to Honor the Babaylan (Tiboli Press, 2005). She is the editor of Babaylan: Filipinos and the Call of the Indigenous,
published by Ateneo de Davao University Research and Publications
Office, 2010. This book is a collection of scholarly essays on
primary/land-based
babaylans in the Philippines, Kapwa psychology and
babaylan practice, babaylan-inspired practices by Filipinos in the
diaspora, as well as personal narratives on decolonization as a
spiritual path.

Deconstructing Stereotypes About Asian Pacific Americans

Staff Development Event: "Deconstructing Stereotypes About Asian Pacific Americans"
As the lead editor of 'Teaching About Asian Americans: Effective Activities, Strategies and Assignments for Classrooms and Workshops',
the workshop presenter will provide instructors with the necessary
cultural competency to better understand Asian Pacific Americans. Upon
completion of the workshop staff will be able to:

Deconstruct the model minority myth of Asian Pacific Americans
through examinations of census data which will sensitize students to the
economic and ethnic diversity of the APA population;

Understand the key differences between refugees and immigrants
through interactive activities that will help staff recognize the loss
and separation associated with the refugee experience, in particular the
experiences of Southeast Asian refugees and their families.
Workshop Leader: Dr. Edith Chen, CSU Northridge
Professor
Chen has been a faculty member at Northridge in the Asian American
Studies department since 2001. Her teaching and research interests
include Chinese American experiences; Chinese in the Americas; Asian
American issues; Asian American women; Food, Culture & Identity; and
Applied Research. During her sabbatical leave in 2008-2009, she was
editing (with Grace Yoo) 'The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Asian American Issues Today'.

Streaming Media Into Your Classroom
This hands-on workshop will provide instructors with the necessary skills to
begin incorporating multimedia into their classroom, curriculum, and
pedagogy. Instructors leave with actual curriculum for immediate use. Upon
completion of the workshop staff will be able to:
- Recognize the different
“channels” of multimedia available to faculty and students,
- Construct
multimedia resources for their students,
- Gain access to online resources
that allow faculty and staff to share multimedia and resources and projects,
- Acquire multimedia curriculum for immediate use in classes and
pedagogy.
Workshop Leader: Marshall Hattori
Marshall Hattori is an English Instructor at De Anza College who loves
YouTube and spoken word. Before coming to De Anza, Marshall was an
independent film maker for six years. For the last eight years he has been
the chairperson for the De Anza Asian Pacific American Film Festival. He
serves on the English Department Distance Learning Committee and the
Catalyst Advisory Committee. In the last two years, Marshall has taught in
the IMPACT AAPI program. As a co-chair of the Asian Pacific American
eXpressions Committee, Marshall designed and constructed a webpage of
creative projects by AAPI students at De Anza College which can be found at
www.apaxdeanza.com

Come learn more about what your LGBTIQQ (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Intersexual Queer and Questioning) students face on a daily basis, and leave with strategies you can use as a staff member and/or instructor to better support these students. We will address issues facing the queer community, and more specifically, the experience of queer youth, queer people of color, and educators working on these issues. We will provide a LGBTIQQ 101, which encompasses a breakdown of terminology and current policy. We will discuss various methods for how you can be a better ally as a productive member of the De Anza community. Lastly, there will of course be time for questions. Please join us!

Pacific Islanders in the Media
Kirsch Center Room 115, 3-5 pm
In this workshop faculty will develop their media literacy and
ability to make connections between Pacific Islander history, social
issues (stereotypes) and cultural context and awareness through film.
For staff and faculty who utilize multimedia projects as classroom
assignments, this will foster students' ability create more thoughtful
and conscientious images of Pacific Islanders in classroom projects. 2 hours of PGA/PAA
credits available.
About the workshop leaders:

"Vika" Palaita, Ph.D teaches in the Department of
Interdisciplinary Studies & Pacific Islander Studies at the City
College of San Francisco.
Kapi’olani Lee is a
MFA candidate in the Cinema department at San Francisco State
University, as well as teaching artist and media literacy instructor for
both the Ninth Street Film Center and Sunset Neighborhood Beacon
Center. Her work in live action and animation explores themes of
spirituality, decolonization, and poetry.

Workshop Description:
Using a highly interactive format, this introductory workshop aims to
provide participants with an overview of the histories and cultures of
Pacific Islanders followed by a dialogue on the struggles faced by
Pacific Islanders in relationship to higher education.
Participants will develop a high level of understanding and cultural
competence about Pacific Islanders and also techniques in working with
Pacific Islander students. These best practices can be utilized by
participants to better support and engage Pacific Islander students at
De Anza in order to promote student success and retention.
Workshop Leaders:
David "Vika" Palaita, Ph.D teaches in the Department of
Interdisciplinary Studies & Pacific Islander Studies at the City
College of San Francisco.
Rick Bonus, Ph.D teaches in the Department of American Ethnic
Studies at the University of Washington. His research and teaching
interests focus on the conjunctions among ethnic studies, American
studies, Pacific Islander Studies, and Southeast Asian studies.

Armed Forces and the challenges they continue to face. The
panel will include World War II Filipino "Veteranos" who are still
fighting for full recognition of their service from the US Government,
as well as De Anza students and staff who are veterans or who currently
serve in the military.

This interactive workshop is for faculty and staff who want to deepen their knowledge and understanding regarding contemporary issues facing Filipino Americas, especially high school and college students. The workshop will feature a discussion of pedagogical strategies, resources and practices that PEP uses/developed to engage students. Facilitated by Pin@y Educational Project's Allyson Tintiangco-Cubales and Rod Daus-Magbual. Coordinated by Mayra Cruz and Karen Chow.
