Where can I plug in my laptop?
There are many power outlets throughout the building. Look for a
power outlet in study carrels and along walls. Please do not plug in
your laptop in an open area where someone could trip over the power
cord.
Where can I get wireless or network
Internet access for my laptop?
Wireless Internet access is available throughout the building.
If your laptop computer is wireless-enabled, simply start up a web
browser and sign in to the DaWopen network as a guest.
This network is unsecured.
What is available in the Open Media Lab?
Lots of computers! and printers and Distance Learning Videotapes.

How do I search for books in the De Anza Library?
Look for the Library Catalog link on our Library home page.
Use this link and you will be at the main search screen
for the catalog. Here you can check for books, videotapes, audiotapes, and reserve
items. For additional help in conducting a search, use the Help link on the catalog
main page.

Is there a way to limit my search to
videotapes or DVDs only?
Use the Catalog's Power Search feature. When you are on the Power Search
screen, select Format and then VIDEORECORDINGS from the pull down menu.
This works with any of the formats listed. For movies, try Format, VIDEORECORDINGS
and in the Word or Phrases box, enter feature films.
What is my User ID? What is my PIN?
The User ID is your library number, located on the front of your student body
card, beginning with 21716. PIN numbers are the last 4 digits of your
library number, which is on the front of your student body card, and begins with 21716...
For example:
My library number is 21716333344455
My PIN number is 4455
Do I need to log in to use the catalog?
No, but there are additional features available to you when you do log in.
For example, you are able to place a book on hold.
How do I place a hold on a book?
When you have identified a book, DVD, videotape, or audiotape that is checked out, look
for a link on the left that says, Place Hold. Select this link and follow
the instructions on the screen.
Can I place a hold on a Reserve item?
No.
How do I get books or articles if the De Anza Library doesn't have them?
We may be able to borrow a copy of the book or get a photocopy of the article
from another library through our Interlibrary Loan service. Look for the
Interlibrary Loan link under Library Services on our main web page.
How can I contact the library?
The phone number for the reference desk is (408) 864-8479. The phone
number for the circulation desk is (408) 864-8761.
Where can I find a quiet place to study?
The library has established three types of study areas:
silent zones, quiet study zones, and group study areas. Silent
zones are for silent study only. Limited conversation in a low voice is
allowed in quiet study zones. Group study and moderate noise levels are
allowed in group study zones. You can locate the best zone for you by
looking for the color-coded signs located on study tables and carols.

Who decides which books and videos the library buys?
All of the librarians assist in selecting materials. Priority is
given to books and media, which enhance student learning. The library
is happy to receive your suggestions. Suggested items, which enhance
student learning, will be purchased as the budget allows.
Why doesn't the library buy textbooks for every class?
The library does not have the budget to buy textbooks. Textbooks are
primarily a student responsibility. However, some instructors choose to
put a copy of the class text on "Reserve."
Does the library accept donations of books or magazines?
The library is happy to receive book dontations. Magazines, however,
are not needed at this time. Donated books
will be added to the library collection if they enhance student
learning. Items not added to the collection are sold in the library
book sale, the proceeds of which are used to purchase new books and
films. Please contact the Acquisitions Department for more details at

Does the library have group study rooms?
Yes. The library has a number of group study rooms.
Keys to these rooms are locate at the circulation desk.
White board markers and erasers are also available, ask
at the circulation desk.
Can I use my cellular phone, iPod, or other electronic device inside
the library?
The library is a place for study and research. We ask that you do
not make calls from your cellular phone inside the library because it
disturbs others who are studying. If you absolutely must receive a call
while you are in the library, turn your phone to vibrate or
other similar quiet mode. If you receive a call, we ask you to make
your return call from outside the library. When using an iPod or other
music player, please keep the volume to a low level so you do not
disturb your neighbors.
Do I need a library card to check out books?
Yes. The De Anza Student Body Card (DASB) is your library card.
Community cards are
also available for nonstudents.

Can I renew books, videotapes and reserves myself?
Yes. When you are in the library catalog, go to My Account. You will find the
link for checking your status, renewing books, and changing your PIN number.
Select Renewing Books and follow the instructions on the screen. Or you may
renew in person.
Books may be renewed two times. Videotapes, and DVDs may be renewed only once.
Reserve items may not be renewed.
How many books or videotapes can I check out?
There is no limit on books.
Videotapes or DVDs, two at a time.
Books on reserve:
Go to the Circulation desk with the call number of the item you need. Call numbers
can be found in the library catalog. To search, click "Reserve Desk" at the top of
the library catalog screen. You can look up reserves by instructor name, course name,
or course number.
DVDs, audio CDs or tapes on reserve:
Media Reserves can be found and viewed,or checked out at the Library Express,
Room LC123.
Distance Learning materials are located in the Open Media Lab.
Where is the Library Express? What is the Library Express?
Library Express is located in Room LC 123. To get there, go to the right of the library's
main doors, around the corder of the building. The Library Express is the place
to go to view or listen to media reserves. There are also computers available for
word processing and Internet use. Bring your current DASB card.
How long may I keep reserve materials?
There are different loan periods for different items. Some check out
for 2 hours, others 24 hours. Some may be taken overnight, others may
not go out overnight. Check the library catalog or ask at the circulation
desk.
How much are overdue fines?
Overdue books and audiotapes: 25 cents per day, $15.00 maximum, $50.00 if lost.
Lost Browsing Collection books, $30.00.
Overdue videotapes or DVDs: $2.00 per day, $15.00 maximum, $50.00 if lost
Overdue hourly(l hr., 2 hr., 4 hr., 24 hr.) reserve items: 25 cents per hour, $100.00 maximum;
if lost all fines up to $100.00 plus
the greater of actual replacement cost or $100.00.
Overdue 3 day, 7 day or 21 day reserves: $2.00 per day, $25.00 maximum. If lost, all fines plus the greater of
actual replacement cost or $100.00.
Overude calculators (4 hr. or 3 day): 25 cents per hour, $100.00 maximum. If lost, all fines plus
$100.00 replacement fee.
Overdue computers in the Open Media Lab, $l.00 per hour.
What is a database?
A research or article database is a collection of organized information
that can be accessed electronically. For instance a newspaper database contains
newspaper articles organized by date and subject keywords. To view databases
that De Anza subscribes to, look under Article Databases or Research Databases at the Library's
home page.

Which database do I use to find newspaper articles?
At De Anza, use the Proquest databases. De Anza's Proquest subscription includes
newspapers such as the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Washington Post...
and several others. Full text articles are available to print or send to your own
email box.
Which database do I use for magazine or journal articles?
Look for the link, Article Databases. You may use general topic databases
or more focused subject collection. The periodical databases
index thousands of magazine and journal articles. Be sure to check the full text box
to view the entire article and also check the peer-reviewed or refereed box for
scholarly articles.
Full text articles are available to print or send to your own
email box.
Can I use the databases from home or my office?
Remote access is available for the subscription databases.
There is a single sign in screen that requires either your
student body card number (beginning with 21716) or your student id number.
