Returns to the Bay Area from Oregon
Jeanine Hawk to Oversee De Anza College's $60 Million Annual Budget

Jeanine Hawk, who has had more than 17 years of increasingly responsible fiscal management experience in both the public and private sectors, has been named De Anza College’s vice president of Finance and College Services. She began her new duties in early March.

She will supervise the overall planning, development and administration of an annual college budget of $60 million and will also serve as a liaison for De Anza with the Foothill-De Anza Community College District and the state.

“I am able and willing to respond quickly to budget variances at the operational level, and I look forward to working within the participatory governance model that De Anza enjoys,” said Hawk, who earned a B.A. in social science from UC Irvine and an M.B.A. from Southern Oregon University in Ashland.

Most recently, Hawk was the finance director for the city of Medford, Ore., where she coordinated citywide fiscal operations. Her varied background includes working as a controller at a small electronics company, running fast-food franchises with her husband Michael, and opening a bead and art shop in Southern Oregon.

The new vice president is thrilled to return to employment at a community college. Between 1994 and 2002, she served in several capacities at Rogue Community College in Grants Pass, Ore. Her positions included associate dean, director of business services and finance director. Hawk directed the fiscal operations for three campuses.

In addition, she was Rogue’s director of Student Budget & Planning and Student Employment Services for two years. In that capacity, Hawk developed services that enhanced student retention and helped students meet their employment goals. “I worked closely with students, understood their perspectives, and saw the effects of college policies and procedures and how they really worked,” she added.

As a finance person, Hawk believes in data-driven decision-making and yet she brings a creative side to her work. “I like to think of new ways to do things, and I like to think out of the box,” she said.

Hawk is committed to community service, especially in support of diversity. Gov. Ted Kulongoski recently appointed her as a commissioner to the Oregon Commission on Service and Volunteerism. Through the years, she has served in many volunteer capacities but is especially proud of her recent work as a member of the Three Rivers School District Board of Education, which serves kindergarten through 12th grade. She is also passionate about her involvement in the Josephine County Human Rights Alliance, which she helped found a decade ago. She is still a board member of that organization.

“The Human Rights Alliance was organized because of some Oregon ballot measures that would have restricted the rights of gays and lesbians,” Hawk explained. “The community formed the alliance, became politically active, and provided education and outreach. Later on the alliance expanded, embraced cultural diversity, and became a community resource for helping to deal with hate crimes.”

Hawk was born in San Francisco and grew up in San Rafael. She and her husband look forward to living in the Bay Area, which they describe as progressive, diverse and culturally rich.

A national search began in September to fill the vice president position, which had been held by Mike Brandy since 1997. Last year he was selected as Foothill-De Anza’s vice chancellor of Business Services.
