Foothill-De Anza Marches in March
About
200 students, faculty and staff from Foothill and De Anza Colleges went to Sacramento
and attended the "March in March" rally on March 17, joining thousands
of supporters from all around the state. Many came on buses from Southern California,
as well as from the Bay Area and Northern California. College representatives
met with many state legislators to inform them about the impact of the Governor's
proposed budget. The predominant student theme was "no fees--no cuts."
For faculty and staff, the major points were proportionate reductions (a 2%
cut is proposed for K-12, with modest '03-'04 increases for UC and CSU) and
modest fee increases over time. Of major emphasis for both groups was the dire
impact to our most vulnerable students, who benefit greatly from Special Education,
EOPS, child care and matriculation services. One of our students with a disability
spoke to the entire crowd of thousands. A student in our Cal Works program,
who has a learning disability and a child in our Child Development Center, also
spoke. Legislators listened carefully to these students, who were our best spokespersons.
Faculty and staff of our Special Education Division personally delivered 8,000
letters from students, staff and the community to our legislators.
