The Student Assistant

The Adapted Physical Education program depends on trained student assistants who are interested in, and willing to work with, people with disabilities in the exercise classroom. No previous training is necessary. Students that assist in the program are typically those looking for first hand experience working in a field that serves individuals with physical disabilities. Many go on to become physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, occupational therapists, recreation therapists, kinesiotherapists, adapted physical educators, fitness trainers, physical educators, etc. Many others continue their education in completely unrelated fields.

We are looking for assistants who like working with people. The skills and understanding related to helping are taught through enrolling in the 4-unit training course (PEA 51 - Introduction to Assisting in Adapted Physical Education). This class is taught in the fall and spring quarters. It meets every Tuesday and Thursday for lecture from 7:30 am to 8:50 am. Students are also required to complete three hours per week assisting in the APE program. After successful completion of PEA 51, student assistants can earn from $5.75 to $8.50 per hour working in the program. Special arrangements can be made for students with previous experience. Volunteers are also welcomed on a case by case basis. If a prospective student wants to know more about PEA 51 he or she may contact Jim Haynes. For more infomation about assisting, contact Larry Bloom .
