The Program

The Cardiac Exercise and Education Program of De Anza College was established in 1983 for individuals interested in improving and maintaining cardiovascular health through a formal, medically supervised program.

Who Should Participate?

The program is geared to individuals who have had a heart attack, bypass surgery, or who are at high risk foe developing cardiovascular disease (high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or a family history of coronary disease).

All participants must be referred by a physician. In addition to meeeting certain criteria, participants must take a treadmill exercise test.

The Classes

Medically supervised exercise classes meet Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (early morning /early evening).

The exercise routine includes:

  • 10-15 minutes of warm-up exercise

  • 30 minutes of conditioning exercise

  • 10 minutes of cool-down exercise

In addition to the exercise program, the class features guest lecturers and discussions about risk factor reduction. Each participant's physical fitness is assessed by the program's Medical Director and staff members. An individualized exercise program is recommended.
