How to Assist in APE

Click here for detailed information on the responsibilities and expectations of being a student assistant in the APE program.

The Student Assistant

The Adapted Physical Education program depends on trained student assistants who are interested in, and willing to work with, people with disabilities in the exercise classroom. No previous training is necessary. Students that assist in the program are typically those looking for first hand experience working in a field that serves individuals with physical disabilities. Many go on to become physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, massage therapy, occupational therapists, recreation therapists, kinesiotherapists, adapted physical educators, fitness trainers, physical educators, etc. Many others continue their education in completely unrelated fields.

We are looking for assistants who like working with people. The skills and understanding related to helping are taught on the job training. Volunteers are welcomed on a case by case basis. If a prospective assistant wants to know more about assisting, contact Larry Bloom.
