Simon, a De Anza student  

Karen

As a single mom who juggles school, homework, work and family life, Karen recognizes the importance of staying focused on her goals. After 22 years of raising children, Karen surprised herself by attending college for the first time. She worried that her need for a job would distract her from succeeding, but De Anza's Financial Aid program helped her afford school. She views her time at De Anza as her job right now and is attaining her goals by not letting small things pull her away.

  

Educational Goal: A.A. in Business, then transfer to San Jose State for a B.A. in Business.

Career Goal: I'd like to run my own business as a consultant who works with cities to design swim centers.

Free time: Studying, 4-wheeling, jet skiing, shopping and reading.

Why De Anza?: Great transfer program and I like the quarter system.

The best thing about De Anza: Nice campus and good teachers.

Biggest fear before starting college: Failure and fear of the unknown.

One item that is essential for college: A computer.

De Anza in three words: Educational, pleasant, surreal (I didn't think I'd be able to do this!).

Favorite book: Tuck Everlasting, by Natalie Babbitt

What CD is in your player right now?: Foo Fighters

Favorite movie: The Saint

What motivates you?: Fulfilling a personal long-term goal.

Advice for new students: Stay focused, be organized and apply for financial aid.
