Simon, a De Anza student  

Simon

Simon is a nursing major who came to De Anza as one of the "Lost Boys" of Sudan, a group of more than 20,000 boys whose parents were killed during the country's civil war. The boys walked hundreds of miles to Ethiopia and back before being sent to refugee camps in Kenya. Simon believes that having compassion and the confidence to help others will contribute to his future success as a nurse.

 

Educational Goal: Associate's degree in nursing with a possible transfer to San Jose State.

Career Goal: Nurse.

Free time: Play basketball and visit with my friends.

Why De Anza?: A De Anza instructor who attends my church encouraged me.

Best thing about De Anza: The quality of education and the teachers .

Biggest fear before starting college: I didn't understand how the system worked at the college level.

One item that is essential for college: A computer.

De Anza in three words: Educational, community, welcoming.

Favorite book: My biology textbook.

What CD is in your player right now?: Christian music.

Favorite movie: Lord of the Rings: Return of the King

What motivates you?: Having a goal and the desire to make my family proud of me.

Advice for new students: 1.) Find a study group right away, 2.) find a tutor right away, 3.) ask your teachers a lot of questions, 4.) take advantage of your teachers office hours to talk to him or her.
