1. What
is General Education^ to the CSU?
The California
State University System (CSU) encourages applicants to follow a general education
(GE) pattern of courses (IGETC or CSUGE^) as part of the minimum 90 CSU-transferable
quarter units required to transfer as a junior. General Education patterns consist of a variety of
courses from a broad range of disciplines designed to give you breadth in your
education. All students must meet general education requirements to receive a bachelor's degree from the CSU. A minimum of 72 quarter units is required for GE, which includes 12 units of upper-division courses. Students may complete all of the lower-division GE requirements at a California community college (CCC) before they tranfer to a CSU campus.
2. What is the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC)?
The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum ( IGETC) is a GE pattern that transfer students
may use to satisfy lower-division GE requirements for either the CSU or UC. IGETC is best suited for students who have not decided on a system, campus and/or a particular major. IGETC is
also appropriate for student with majors that do not require an extensive amount of lower division
course preparation. For students in high unit majors the focus is primarily
on fulfilling lower-division major courses rather than completing the entire GE pattern prior to transfer. This information can be found in the UC campus college catalog under your choice
of major.
IGETC is not a transfer admission requirement. Be advised that not all CSU campuses and
majors accept IGETC to satisfy lower division GE requirements and that, depending on the college or major program, additional requirements may be necessary. There are some requirements
listed on the IGETC that are specific to the UC or the CSU. Most CSU campuses will consider using the courses listed on IGETC for credit towards
a campus-specific GE pattern.
3. What is the California State University General Education-Breadth (CSUGE^) pattern?
The California State University
(CSU) System approves a pattern of courses at California community colleges that will
be accepted in order to satisfy the lower division GE requirements at any one of their 23 campuses. It is important to note that
De Anza has a unique CSUGE pattern that includes three (3) Area-specific requirements (See the complete De Anza CSUGE pattern below):
Area C: EWRT 1B or ESL 5;
Area D: (HIST 17A or 17B or 17C) and POLI 1; and
Area C/D: one ICS course
As a result of the CSUGE pattern specific to De Anza, students should be careful when utilizing tools like CSUMentor's Transfer Student Planner or referencing De Anza's CSUGE information on the ASSIST Web site (www.assist.org). Please see a counselor or academic advisor if you have any questions.
4. How
do I know which GE pattern to follow?
Your
unique circumstances (previous college work, major focus) will determine which
plan is best for you. Some majors prefer that students not concentrate on general
education. Meet with an counselor/academic
advisor to determine which plan meets your needs.
5. Can I use coursework completed at another college to certify CSUGE^ or IGETC?
Yes. Courses taken at another California community college (CCC) will be applied in the approved Areas designated by that college when the courses were completed. Check ASSIST for details. Courses from regionally accredited institutions could apply towards CSUGE or IGETC as long as they meet CSUGE and IGETC criteria and standards. Only foreign coursework from U.S. regionally accredited institutions may be applied to CSUGE or IGETC. Although De Anza will not certify other foreign coursework, a CSU campus may elect to apply them to GE after students have transferred.
Students must arrange to have transcripts sent to De Anza - Admissions and Records Office. Once transcripts are on file, students are advised to meet with a counselor to request to have those transcipts evaluated. Evaluation time varies so this process should be initiated as soon as possible. If De Anza College evaluators are unable to determine the applicability of a non-CCC course towards CSUGE or IGETC, it is the student's responsibility to provide additional information on the course to A & R. Writing samples may be needed for courses reviewed for Areas A2, A3 and the second writing course in Area C on the CSUGE and Areas 1A and 1B on IGETC.
6. Will I get credit on the CSUGE or IGETC for Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) examinations that I took in high school?
Yes, for more information review the charts below, which include any restrictions:
CSUGE - AP Exams Chart
CSUGE - IB Exams Chart
IGETC - AP Exams Chart
IGETC - IB Exams Chart
For students who do not certify IGETC or fully certify CSUGE, each CSU campus will determine how to apply credit from external exams toward major preparation or its local degree and general education requirements. Consult the prospective CSU campus catalog or Web site to determine credit for AP and IB exams.
All AP or IB exam reports must be received and evaluated by De Anza prior to a request for GE certification (see process below). Note: The certification process may be delayed if exam reports have not been previously evaluated.
Advanced Placement (AP) – official reports must be sent to De Anza (A&R) directly from College Board in order to apply.
International Baccalaureate (IB) – official reports must be sent to De Anza (A&R) directly from the IB Organization in order to apply.
College Level Examination Program (CLEP) – cannot be used on CSUGE.
7. What is GE certification?
The CSUGE Certification and IGETC Certification are official documents sent directly from De Anza College to another institution verifying the courses/Advanced Placement (AP) exams applied towards CSUGE completion (or Area completion) or towards IGETC completion. This is not an automatic process. Students planning to use coursework from other colleges or AP exams to certify CSUGE or IGETC must submit OFFICIAL (sealed) exam reports to De Anza - Admissions and Records Office prior to requesting certification. Once transcripts are on file, students are advised to meet with a counselor or academic advisor to request to have transcripts evaluated.
8. When should I request GE certification?
General Education certification is not an automatic process. It is a student's responsibility to request CSUGE or IGETC certification. It is important that you request certification of GE coursework prior to enrolling at your transfer institution. Upon enrolling in final course requirements and receiving conditional admission to the University, you may submit the General Education Certification Request Form to De Anza -Admissions and Records Office.
If you attended other colleges or received scores of 3 or higher on AP exams, all applicable OFFICIAL transcripts and AP exam reports should be on file at De Anza College before requesting certification.
9. What are the specific De Anza College courses which will fulfill
the requirements for CSUGE^ or IGETC?
Courses may be added to the CSUGE or IGETC patterns mid-year. Visit the ASSIST Web site or check back on this Web site periodically for updates.

^De Anza College
requirements for the certification of California State University General Education
(CSUGE) differ from the requirements identified by the California State University
and the information published on www.assist.org. Students
must complete the CSUGE requirements as stated in the De Anza College Catalog,
Schedule of Classes or Web Page, in order to qualify for certification of CSUGE
by De Anza College.
Caution: The final responsibility for a successful transfer program rests with
the student. Resources online and at De Anza College are designed to assist
you in getting as accurate information as possible. This information changes frequently,
however, and can impact your admission to the university. It is highly advised
that you meet periodically with advisors at both De Anza College and at the prospective university
to confirm your choice of classes and develop an educational plan.
