What is General Education^ to the CSU?

The California State University System (CSU) encourages applicants to follow a general education (GE) pattern of courses (IGETC or CSUGE^) as part of the minimum 90 CSU-transferable quarter units required to transfer as a junior. General Education patterns consist of a variety of courses from a broad range of disciplines designed to give you breadth in your education.

What is IGETC?

  • IGETC is the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum which students can use to transfer primarily to either the UC or the CSU. Some of the requirements on the pattern are specific to the UC or the CSU. Be advised that not all colleges and majors accept IGETC to satisfy lower division general education requirements and that additional requirements may be required. Most campuses will consider using the courses listed on IGETC for credit towards a GE pattern.

  • IGETC is appropriate for majors that do not require an extensive amount of lower division course preparation. Some high unit majors prefer that you concentrate mainly on the lower division major preparation rather than a full GE pattern. This type of information can usually be found in the university catalog under your choice of major.

  • IGETC is best suited for students who have not decided on a system, campus and/or a particular major.

What is CSUGE^?

The California State University (CSU) System approves a pattern of courses at the Community College that will be accepted for the lower division GE requirements at any one of their 23 campuses. See De Anza's CSUGE pattern below.

How do I know which GE pattern to follow?

Your unique circumstances (previous college work, major focus) will determine which plan is best for you. Some majors prefer that you do not concentrate on general education. Meet with an academic advisor/counselor to determine which plan meets your needs.

Will I get credit on the CSUGE or IGETC for Advanced Placement (AP) examinations that I took in high school?

An acceptable AP examination score of 3, 4 or 5 is required to grant credit for both CSUGE and IGETC certification.

Units earned by AP exams toward CSUGE certification are awarded based on a CSU systemwide approval list. AP exam credit may be incorporated toward CSUGE certification by any participating institution. All CSU campuses will accept the minimum units shown on the CSU Systemwide Credit for Advanced Placement Exams chart toward fulfillment of the specified CSUGE area.

For IGETC certification purposes, AP exam scores of 3, 4 or 5 equate to 4 or 5 quarter units. With the exception of Critical Thinking-English Composition and Oral Communication requirements (Areas 1B and 1C), each approved AP exam may be used in lieu of one course to satisfy one IGETC area and the Language Other Than English (Area 6A) proficiency level. For more information on credit for AP exams see the University of California's publication, Using Advanced Placement to Satisfy UC Eligibility and IGETC.

NOTE: Students need to check their transfer institution's college catalog or Web site to determine AP applicability towards major preparation and campus specific General Education (GE) requirements.

What is GE certification?

The CSUGE certification and IGETC Certification are official documents sent directly from De Anza College to another institution that verifies the courses/Advanced Placement (AP) exams used towards CSUGE completion (or Area completion) or towards IGETC completion. Students planning to use AP exams for CSUGE or IGETC certification must submit OFFICIAL (sealed) exam reports to the De Anza College Admissions and Records Office prior to requesting certification.

When should I request GE certification?

It is important that you request certification of general education coursework prior to enrolling at your transfer institution. It is a student's responsibility to request CSUGE or IGETC certification. Upon enrolling in final course requirements and receiving conditional admission to the University, you may submit the General Education Certification Form to De Anza's Admissions and Records Office.

If you attended other colleges or received scores of 3 or higher on AP exams, all applicable OFFICIAL transcripts and AP exam reports should be on file at De Anza College before requesting certification.

What are the specific De Anza College courses which fulfill the requirements for CSUGE^ or IGETC?

Courses may be added to the CSUGE or IGETC patterns mid-year. Go to www.assist.org or check back on this Web site periodically for updates.

How does the plan for a high unit major compare to that of a standard major?

Comparison between
A) a standard major
and
B) a high unit major

A) Transfer work for Standard Major
Example:History
B) Transfer work for High Unit Major
example: Biology
Dotted lines in diagrams above indicate that percentages vary based on specific requirements in the major.

^De Anza College requirements for the certification of California State University General Education (CSUGE) differ from the requirements identified by the California State University and the information published on www.assist.org. Students must complete the CSUGE requirements as stated in the De Anza College Catalog, Schedule of Classes or Web Page, in order to qualify for certification of CSUGE by De Anza College.

Caution: The final responsibility for a successful transfer program rests with the student. Resources online and at De Anza College are designed to assist you in getting as accurate information as possible. This information changes frequently, however, and can impact your admission to the university. It is highly advised that you meet periodically with advisors at both De Anza College and at the prospective university to confirm your choice of classes and develop an educational plan.
