Admission Requirements - Independent/Out-of-State Colleges & Universities

Admissions requirements vary by independent (also referred to as "private") institution and by major or program of study.  There is no standard set of admission requirements among independent/private colleges and universities. In addition to setting its own unique admission requirements, each independent college or university takes into consideration the talents and academic potential of every individual applicant.  For information about admission requirements to California independent/private colleges and universities, visit

Students are advised to consult with a De Anza College counselor or academic advisor as early as possible to confirm your choice of classes and to develop an education plan for transfer.  To schedule an appointment with a De Anza counselor or academic advisor visit the Counseling & Advising Center, located on the 2nd floor of the Registration & Student Services Building.

Transfer Tips:

  • Complete English and Math requirements as early as possible.
  • Whenever possible, focus on completeing both minimum admission requirements and major preparation course work.
  • Complete as many required courses as possible by end of spring quarter prior to fall transfer.
  • Apply to more than one college or university.
  • Be sure to visit the campus of your choice.  Many independent colleges and universities sponsor Open House and Transfer Day events to introduce prospective students to the campus community.  It may also be possible to arrange an individual tour by contacting the institution's Admissions or Outreach Office.
  • Meet with an admissions representative or major advisor from the campus of your choice to ensure proper educational planning and successful transfer.

Students are encouraged to meet as early as possible and periodically with a counselor or academic advisor both at De Anza College and at the transfer institution to confirm your choice of classes and to develop an education plan for transfer.
