1. What
is general education to the UC?
A general education (GE) pattern consists of a
variety of courses from a broad range of disciplines which is designed to give you breadth
in your education. Transfer students applying to the UC must complete a minimum number of courses designed to fulfill lower-division breadth/general education requirements for transfer. General education requirements vary by UC campus, College within a UC campus, and by major. At De Anza College, students have the option of completing the IGETC to satisfy lower-division GE requirements at the UC.
2. What is the purpose of IGETC?
The purpose of the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) is to provide an option for community college transfer students to fulfill lower-division general education breadth requirements before enrolling at a campus of the University of California or the California State University.
It is important to understand the relationship of UC general education/breadth (IGETC or campus-specific), admission, major preparation and graduation requirements. For example, since all courses used for the IGETC must be completed before entering the University, it is sometimes mistakenly considered an admissions requirement. The IGETC does not change existing University and campus specific transfer admission or prerequisite requirements. A student does not need to complete IGETC in order to become eligible for UC admission.
-
IGETC
is most helpful for students who have not decided on a campus or a particular major.
-
IGETC is not appropriate for high unit majors
(e.g. engineering or the physical and natural sciences), which require completion of an extensive amount of lower-division course preparation.
-
IGETC is subject to UC course limitations and is not accepted at all
colleges or for all majors.
- IGETC does not guarantee admission to a UC campus or program of choice.
- IGETC is not an admissions requirement to the UC.
3. How
do I know which GE pattern to follow?
Your
unique circumstances (previous college work, major focus) will determine which
plan is best for you. Some majors prefer that you do not concentrate heavily on
general education. Meet with a counselor or academic advisor
in the campus Counseling & Advising Center to determine which pattern best meets your needs.
4. What
De Anza College courses meet the requirements for IGETC?
IGETC 2009-2010
Courses may be added to the IGETC pattern mid-academic year; check back on this Web site or go to www.assist.org regularly for updates.
|
5. Which majors or colleges within a specific UC campus do
not recommend or accept IGETC?
In general, students pursuing majors that require extensive lower-division preparation (e.g. Engineering, Science majors, UC Berkeley Haas School of Business) are not advised to follow the IGETC. Such students should concentrate on completing as many of the prerequisites for the major that the UC campus may screen for to determine eligibility for admission. For a list of majors and colleges at the UC that prefer transfer students follow a more prescribed lower-division curriculum, click on IGETC Considerations.
6. Can I use coursework completed at another college to certify IGETC?
Yes. Courses taken at another California community college (CCC) will be applied in the approved Areas designated by that college when the courses were completed. Check www.assist.org for details. Courses from regionally accredited institutions could apply towards IGETC as long as they meet IGETC criteria and standards. Only foreign coursework from U.S. regionally accredited institutions may be applied to IGETC. Students must arrange to have transcripts sent to De Anza - Admissions and Records Office. Once transcripts are on file, students are advised to meet with a counselor to request to have those transcipts evaluated. Evaluation time varies so this process should be initiated as soon as possible. If De Anza College evaluators are unable to determine the applicability of a non-CCC course towards IGETC, it is the student's responsibility to provide additional information on the course to A & R. Writing samples may be needed for courses reviewed Areas 1A and 1B.
7. Will I get credit on IGETC for Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) examinations that I took in high school?
Yes, for more information review the charts below, which include any restrictions:
IGETC: AP Exam Credit
IGETC: IB Exam Credit
For students who do not certify IGETC, each UC campus will determine how to apply credit from AP or IB exams toward its general education requirements. Consult the prospective UC campus catalog or Web site to determine credit for AP and IB exams.
All AP or IB exam reports must be received and evaluated by De Anza prior to a request for GE certification (see process below). Note: The certification process may be delayed if exam reports have not been previously evaluated.
Advanced Placement (AP) – official reports must be sent to De Anza (A&R) directly from College Board in order to apply.
International Baccalaureate (IB) – official reports must be sent to De Anza (A&R) directly from the IB Organization in order to apply.
College Level Examination Program (CLEP) – cannot be used on IGETC.
8. What are
various ways I can meet the Language Other Than English (Area 6A) requirement on IGETC?
Students transferring to the University of California who intend to complete the IGETC, are required to demonstrate a minimal level of competence (proficiency) in a language other than English equal to two years of high school study. For a list of ways to meet the language other than English requirement on the IGETC at De Anza College, see IGETC Certification of Proficiency in a Language Other Than English.
9. What is IGETC Certification?
The IGETC certification is an official document sent directly from De Anza College to another institution verifying the courses or Advanced Placement (AP) exams used towards IGETC completion. This is not an automatic process. Upon enrolling in final required courses and receiving conditional admissions to the university, students must submit a request for certification to the De Anza Admissions and Records Office. All necessary documentation (high school/college transcripts, AP) must be received and evaluated by De Anza prior to the request for IGETC certification. The certification process may be delayed if transcripts/exams have not been previously evaluated. GE Certification Request forms are available in Admissions & Records, the Counseling and Advising Center and at www.deanza.edu/counseling/forms.html.
10. When should I request IGETC Certification?
General Education certification is not an automatic process. It is a student's responsibility to request IGETC certification. It is important that you request certification of IGETC coursework prior to enrolling at your transfer institution. Upon enrolling in final course requirements and receiving conditional admission to the University, you may submit the General Education Certification Formto De Anza - Admissions and Records Office.
If you attended other colleges or received scores of 3 or higher on AP exams, all applicable OFFICIAL transcripts and exam reports should on file at De Anza College before requesting certification. If you are planning to satisfy the 'Proficiency in a Language Other Than English' requirement (Area 6) on IGETC with high school coursework, an OFFICIAL copy of your high school transcript must be on file at De Anza.
NOTE: If you completed coursework at more than one California community college you should have your coursework certified by the last California community college you attended for a regular term (i.e. fall, winter, spring) prior to transfer to the UC.
11.Where
can I find campus-specific GE patterns for the UC?
Visit www.assist.org and select De Anza College and your transfer campus of choice. Under the "Agreements with Other Campuses" section select "For General Education/Breadth" if available. General Education/Breadth requirements are not available for all UC campuses on ASSIST. You should also check the general education/breadth requirements for your prospective major or school listed in the general catalog for each UC campus. Links to the GE/Breadth for each UC campus are available below:

Caution: The final responsibility for a successful transfer program rests with
the student. Resources online and at De Anza College are designed to assist
you in getting as accurate information as possible. This information changes frequently,
however, and can impact your admission to the university. It is highly advised
that you meet periodically with advisors at both De Anza College and at the prospective university
to confirm your choice of classes and develop an educational plan.
