Veterans and Dependents are required by law to declare a two-year major or certificate as listed under VA approved courses, or a Transfer major based on agreements with California State University, University of California or other articulated four year college/university. An "undeclared" or "general education" major is not acceptable for VA purposes. Courses which are NOT listed on a student's education plan and are NOT part of the chosen major will NOT be certified by the Veterans Services Office. (See Policies, Guidelines & Responsibilities) A student changing a major must meet with an Academic Counselor and develop a new Educational Plan reflecting the required courses for the new major and a copy must be submitted to the Veterans Service Office. In addition Veterans are required to fill out Form 22-1995 for Chapter 30, 1606, & 1607's and Chapter 35's must fill out Form 22-5495. Dual majors or a major and minor are not allowed by the VA in any degree AA/AS, BA/BS Transfer or certificate programs. The VA will only certify for one major or degree at a time. It is recommended applications be filled out on-line and a printed copy delivered to the Veterans Office. Paper applications can take 8 to 12 weeks to process, subsequent paperwork usually 6 to 8 weeks. Federal regulations require Veterans to submit OFFICIAL SEALED transcripts to De Anza from all prior schools, colleges, training institutions, and technical schools. This includes all training and education received before entering active duty, during service, and after discharge.
An Evaluation and Matriculation process assesses the amount of prior credit which may be applied to a students current major/program. ** NOTE: DO NOT OPEN SEALED ENVELOPES!! All new De Anza students must be assessed for Math and English Placement. VA does pay for remedial classes when placement test scores recommend it. Contact the Assessment Office at 408. 864.8717 to schedule an Assessment Test in the Student & Community Services Building across from the Veterans Services Office.
