Across a number of trades and industries, one of the most common job requirements is proficiency in business-related computer applications. Job seekers who have proven experience in word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software have a better chance of entering the job market and succeeding in the office environment. On a more focused level, there is also a regular need for individuals with experience in electronic publishing and web development to handle corporate communications in the increasingly digital world.

Employment Outlook

The California Employment Development Department (EDD) collects data about the state’s workforce. These data include information about the number of people employed in the field, job outlook, and wage information. The California EDD predicts for the period 2008-2018 the number of openings for executive secretaries and administrative assistants to increase by over 6%. General Info About the Program

De Anza College offers certificate and degree programs in a flexible format to give individuals a solid background in the computer applications of their choice. The Certificate of Achievement gives an overview of many popular business software packages, while the Certificate of Achievement-Advanced offers more in-depth focus on business applications, electronic publishing and web development. The degree program also includes modules in general business and communications skills.
