Careers in Network Design and Administration

A computer network can consist of anything from two to thousands of computers. Network administrators maintain all the different levels of network configuration and complexity. Their duties can involve building the network, overseeing the external and internal web presence, or supporting network system backups and archiving activities. Whether they are responsible for the installation, configuration or maintenance of an organization's network, network and systems administrators have been in steady demand for the past ten years and the California Employment Development Department (EDD) projects that this field will continue to grow.  The outlook through 2012 according to EDD labor market information is a very promising 37% increase (Source: Labor Market Info www.labormarketinfo.edd.ca.gov).

Necessary Education and Skills for Career Success
A student works on a larger server network.Network administrators need a foundation of commonly used computer network and system concepts, practices, and procedures to ensure success in a variety of situations. This includes a broad understanding of computer hardware, software installation and computer network trouble-shooting techniques. Network and systems administrators should also have good problem solving and communication skills.
