Careers in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT)

Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is a newly recognized category of laboratory professional in the state of California. These skilled workers are becoming integral members of the health care delivery system.  MLT's process specimens and perform laboratory tests that provide clinical information for disease prevention, medical diagnosis, and treatment.  In particular, individuals in this field collect, process, and perform analytical tests of body fluids, cells, and other substances; recognize factors that affect procedures and results; perform and monitor quality control within specific limits; perform preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment and instruments; apply basic scientific principles, learn new techniques, and practice safe work habits.  For the period 2002-2012, the California Employment Development Department projects sizeable growth at 19% in the number of opportunities for MLT's.
