BASIC WRITING CONCEPTS
(Grades 6-8) (552)
Students in this class will learn basic writing concepts and the writing process. From analyzing main ideas, topic sentences, coherence, unity and structures in given paragraphs, students will move to creating their own pieces
of writing while working with narrative, descriptive, expository, persuasive and compare-and-contrast paragraphs. The course will include rewriting, editing and revising based on instructor feedback.
Instructor: Bina Barnabas grew up in India, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s in English literature. For more than 40 years, she has taught ranging in age from 5 to 75 in India, Japan and the United States. She especially enjoys teaching language arts to middle-schoolers. She likes to read and play with paper, fabric, needle and thread.

Session 1: Aug. 22 and 29, Sept. 5, 12, 19 and 26, Oct. 3 and 10 (eight Saturdays), 9:30 -10:50 a.m.
Session 2: Oct. 17, 24 and 31, Nov. 7, 14 and 21, Dec. 5 and 12 (eight Saturdays; no class on Nov. 28), 9:30-10:50 a.m.
C++ PROGRAMMING –
ADVANCED LEVEL
(Grades 5-8 and 9-12) (549)
This course will focus completely on object-oriented programming techniques using C++ with an emphasis on the application of advanced C++ techniques such as classes and objects, file handling, inheritance, virtual function, function overloading, function overriding, polymorphism, exception handling, standard template libraries and abstract data structures. This is an advanced course and presumes that students
have extensive background in C++ programming.
Instructor: Pragati Dharmale has taught for more than 12 years in schools and industry, including courses in engineering and programming languages. She has also worked as a senior design engineer for Whirlpool in India, a web and software developer for Resource Navigation in Boston, and a data security processor for Intuit in Tucson.
